Well, this was weird. Mike peered at himself in the mirror, rubbing his jawline. He turned his head, trying for a different angle. Nope, still there. Frowning – yup, his…ears moved too.
Mike wasn't really sure what happened, but he'd woken up with dog ears on top of his head, his regular old human ears gone. Or changed; something like that. They were the same colour as his hair: dark brown at the base, growing lighter the closer they were to the tips. Tips that flopped forward, almost brushing his forehead. He had a tail too now, long and furry - that had been a, well, a pain in the butt to get out of his night clothes.
His ears twitched in the direction of his door and Mike had just enough time to hear someone was outside (huh, his hearing hadn't been that good before) and turned to face it when it opened.
"Hey, Mikey," Chuck said distractedly, his head ducked as he read something off the screen in front of him, "have you seen my – what the heck happened to your head?" he yelped, the screen flickering out of view as his arms dropped.
Not a hallucination then, if Chuckles could see it too. "Uh…I wo-"
Before Mike had finished speaking, Chuck had rushed over to his side and – wow. Hands. Hands were good. Hands felt nice on his ears.
"Mikey!" Chuck hissed and Mike snapped his attention back to his friend. Okay then, definitely weird. And his tail had been wagging. Ugh, really?
"I need you to focus, all right?" Chuck said, his breathing shallow as he gripped Mike by the shoulders. "How long have you been like this?"
He shrugged. "Not sure there, Chuck – I woke up with them." He'd only been staring at them for a couple of minutes? Pretty sure about that.
"You woke up with…" Chuck repeated faintly, trembling.
"…Chuckles?"
Chuck made a strangled noise. "Did you forget about the zombies?" He flailed, waggling his fingers. "People changed after a couple of-! …Seconds," Chuck finished quietly, bringing his arms down to stare at his hands.
Mike's ears flattened, and he could feel the growl in his throat at his frustration of his body being out of his control. "Well," he said, eyeing Chuck's hands too, "you haven't changed yet so I guess this isn't contagious." And he had most of his mind left by the feel of it – his time as a zombie was a complete blank, but he couldn't have been thinking if he'd tried to attack Dutch, the same going for the rest of the Burners. Although he was definitely a bit more distractible now.
"Yeah, I guess." Chuck brushed his hair out of his eyes, looking him over. "What about you, bro? Feeling furrier? Do you wanna – uh, actually, never mind."
Mike's grinned, looping an arm around his friend's shoulders. "Do I want to chase cars?" he finished for him, feeling his tail start to wag again – at teasing Chuck, not at the thought of chasing cars. "Nah, don't think so – I might have better hearing, but there's no way I'd be able to keep up."
"Well, that's good to hear," Chuck mumbled, his shoulders slumping. He then pulled up a screen, his fingers tapping at a couple of buttons. "So, uh, should we go out and show off our leader's new image, or do you want to see if this is, you know, permanent first?"
Oh, everyone was going to love how Mike Chilton, leader of the hated Burners, the driver of Mutt, was now a mutt himself. Heh. But… Mike twisted around to look at his tail. Yeah, he wasn't going to be able to drive Mutt like this - not without some modifications anyway. And if his hearing was better than what it normally was…
His ears flattened at the thought of Mutt's snarling engine.
And if it got out he was out of commission, well, that would be just the invitation Kane was looking for to demolish Motorcity. And that could not happen.
"Just keep it between us Burners for the time-being," Mike told him.
Chuck nodded, grinning. "You got it, bro."
"Hey, guys?" Mike said, seeing his friends' avatars pop up instantly. "Can you come to my room? There's something I need to show you."
There was a chorus of affirmations.
It was going to be interesting seeing everyone else's reactions to him. Mike's tail started wagging again.
