Tao groaned, his throat raw, his eyes squeezed shut, sweat beading his skin. Boss had said it would be excruciating and so far it had been a hair's breadth side of bearable. Which didn't mean much after all the other modifications he'd had and as much as Boss had warned them, Tao knew he was still going easy on them.
'Tao.'
Oh, shit. The breath caught in Tao's throat. It wasn't a singular voice, multiple voices layered on top one another, echoing and hissing.
The Dark Spear really had been wanting to meet him and Takeo.
"Hey," he called back and it was a million times worse than being inspected by Union scientists – at least then it had only been four, tops, while this was dozens and Tao knew exactly where their attention was, pressing his skin like they had an actual form. Cree-
"Woah, woah, no." Tao dodged out of the grasping hands. "No touching."
'But you like touching people.' Dark amusement coupled with bared fangs. 'And you're ours now.'
"Boss told you a lot about us, huh?" Not good, not good, and he was his own person, thank you very much.
'We see what he sees, know what he knows.' An off-hand comment, the presences swirling around him, checking for blind spots.
It would have been nice to have Takeo at his back. Even though this was all happening in his head.
His stray thought was enough to be considered a distraction and Tao felt the Dark Spear gather and charge.
He flicked his hand out on instinct, his cables snapping into existence (don't think about it; if he did, they could disappear) and pierced through the dark mass. Tao electrified it, hearing multiple shrieks, even though he couldn't feel or see it hitting anything. The cloud dissipated and-
Tao heaved a gasp like he hadn't breathed for several minutes, his eyes snapping open. Owowow, bad idea – the lights were too bright.
His face was tingling, like something had been spilled… Oh. Tao swallowed, feeling the 'liquid' move, drawing away and exposing more of his skin. That was the Dark Spear.
"How are you feeling?" Boss' voice was soft and Tao exhaled, not wanting to close his eyes just yet in case he tumbled into another fight with the Dark Spear and was this what the Boss did every day?
Boss chuckled. "Not quite, no."
Tao stared. Wait. He hadn't had the energy to say that – except he could feel concern that wasn't his own and it wasn't the Dark Spear's spiky weight either.
"Boss?" he squeaked. Boss hadn't said they'd end up whatever-this-was too. It wasn't a contract. Mind bond? Because of the Dark Spear? Since they shared that now?
"Tao." Boss rested his hand on Tao's shoulder and Tao could feel his amusement, which was way lighter than the Dark Spear's. "Tao."
"Right, Boss." No thinking as loud; he'd have to get used to that.
"Rest," Boss said, shaking his head. "You can do that later."
"'Kay." His eyelids were droopy anyway, his body heavy with lack of energy. Except…if he was connected to Boss, then that had to mean… But there was no-one else there.
Where was Takeo?
"Still adjusting. He hasn't been consumed yet."
"Ah…" That was good… Tao closed his eyes and drifted off, the corner of his sight flickering with purple.

I WOULD LIKE SOMETHING LIKE THIS TO HAPPEN. BUT MORE EPIC. BECAUSE THIS IS ME AND I'M PREDICTABLE AS HELL.
I totally want to do a version where at Takeo or Tao loses instead and gets taken over.
