M-21 growled as he stomped through the forest, not caring much for the noise he was making. There was only so much of Tao’s presence he could take at a time, and when the arachnid seemed to insist he had to play a joke every once in a while…
He needed space.
M-21 dropped down next to a river, leaning an elbow on a knee. As much as he wanted to take his frustrations out on the forest, he knew that that would be too much and would draw the Union’s attention.
But the sound of the river flowing past was calming at least and he sighed, trying to-
His ear flicked behind him, hearing something there. He growled softly. “Tao,” he said, his ears going flat for a second, “I want to be alone.”
No response. Which was unusual since Tao never shut up.
M-21 turned around, and then scrambled to his feet, claws ready. It hadn’t been Tao, but a different humanoid with long flowing purple hair, a horn poking out from middle of his forehead, twisted ridges going up it. His eyes were also fully blue with no whites to them.
“What do you want?” he demanded, scowling.
The other blinked, hesitating for a second before taking a step closer.
“Don’t!” M-21 barked, baring his teeth. Did he have to be bothered now?
There was a whispering, like something was trying to tell him something, but it was different from when wolves talked to him.
M-21 hissed, jerking back. Because it was happening in his fucking mind. Anything that tried to enter his mind was something that was trying to control him.
No time. No time to yell or warn. No time in case they were already changing things in his mind, changing how he thought. Controlling him.
He lunged towards the other person, claws ready to-
“Shit!” M-21 fell, Tao’s rope-like webbing wrapping around him, binding his arms and legs together.
“I know I’m not supposed to get in the way when you fight,” Tao said, dropping down from the canopy, hand still connected to the webbing, “but attacking a defenseless-”
“He’s not defenseless!” M-21 snapped, struggling to escape. “He was trying to mind control me!”
“Mind cont-?” Tao looked across at the other person.
And burst out laughing. “Wait, waitwaitwait,” Tao said, arms clutched around his stomach, his shoulders shaking. “You can hear him?”
M-21 scowled. “Yeah. He’s trying to-”
“He’s a unicorn,” Tao said, still snickering.
A unicorn? M-21 frowned. He remembered reading about them, but they’d never been close to what he and M-24 were looking for, so he hadn’t looked too closely.
“You know,” Tao said, waving a hand, “one horn on the forehead, only show themselves and can be heard by those pure of heart?” Tao’s grin was huge.
M-21 scowled harder. “He’s got the wrong fucking person.” Obviously.
“But you can still hear him.”
The unicorn hadn’t done much since Tao had interfered, but…there didn’t seem to be any mocking in his posture. Just confusion in how he tilted his head.
“I can,” M-21 admitted. Probably only because of all the practice he’d had with - he cut the thought off, the memories and pain still too raw for him to handle.
The unicorn moved, taking a step closer before hesitating.
“What,” M-21 said, narrowing his eyes and then glaring at Tao, who still hadn’t released him.
[You’re… You’re hurting.]
He snorted. “And?” He always was, one way or another. He would prefer it if other people didn’t know though.
“Great!” Tao clapped his hands, the webbing disintegrating. “We’ve got a new person to join us!”
What. “I didn’t say-”
“Unicorn,” Tao stressed, waving a hand towards the unicorn. “Once they attach themselves to a person, they don’t leave until — well, no-one’s really figured out why.”
M-21 scowled as he got to his feet. As much as Tao liked playing pranks, he also didn’t lie. Twisting the truth for his own amusement was another thing, but for the most part, M-21 could trust the words that came out of his mouth.
“This’ll be great! You’ll have to talk more.”
“Because there’s one more person? You two can talk with each other.” It would give him less reason to talk now, which was better for him.
“Because,” Tao drew out, “I can’t hear him, so you’re gonna have to be the translator, to make sure there’s no miscommunications.”
…Fucking great.
