Christmas Spirit

Rihito eyed his family as they dashed around the house, putting decorations up and chattering about presents and when Kurumi was coming over to start planning what route she and Kaito would be taking. He used to be angry at them for this, for celebrating the time that was the entire reason they could be turned into slaves at any point in their lives, for still celebrating when Kaito had found his santa and been bound to her. Now that his santa had found him, Rihito wasn't sure what he felt. He'd met his santa around Christmas time, and they'd delivered presents that year (not that they'd had much choice what with Kurumi being injured); as reluctant as Rihito wanted to say it, he had enjoyed doing it.
Kaito was hauling the box of tree decorations, humming under his breath, as he walked past. When he saw Rihito, he grinned. "Hey, can you invite Daisuke and Miyuki over the next time you see them?"
Rihito glowered at him, snorting. "And when am I going to-"
"Come here."
"-argh!" Of course. Of course of course his santa would call him right then, and Rihito couldn't do anything as the reins tightened around his neck and his house disappeared, his santa's ceiling replacing his view. For once, he wasn't a foot off the ground and his breath wasn't knocked out of him.
Just as Rihito was opening his mouth to yell at his santa, something soft hit him in the face. Startled, Rihito just blinked up at it, trying to understand what it was. It was red, and he could feel one part of it was fluffy.
…Oh. He sat up, grabbing the santa hat before it fell. His santa had his face leaning on the cup of his palm, the picture of resignation. On top of his head was a santa hat. "Miyuki wanted all three of us to wear one and she…" He waved a hand. Rihito stifled a groan; it hadn't been a cat this time - it had been Miyuki that had made his santa give him an order.
Rihito looked down at the santa hat, feeling the rough fabric under his fingers. Huffing, he placed the santa hat on top of his head. The ball at the end of the hat tickled the back of his neck and he shook his head, trying to move it elsewhere – all that did was make the ball sweep right across the back of his neck. Rihito sighed, deciding not to care about it.
Miyuki smiled up at him, and he managed to smile back at her.
"So," Rihito said slowly, almost mumbling, "my family wants to see you on Christmas."
His santa quirked an eyebrow at him, pointing with his eyes towards his own santa hat, and Rihito shook his head. Not for that, though he had a feeling his santa and Kurumi would be putting their heads together to see who they'd gotten and the best way to get to them this year anyway.
"Miyuki?"
"Can we?" Miyuki said, a grin spread right across her face, her eyes sparkling.
His own lips curling into a fond smile, his santa nodded. "All right."
Christmas may have used to have been something Rihito hated, but now, he didn't mind it as much.
