Chosen [Part 10]

Fandom: Original
Summary: Ras has just been chosen by the Gods to protect humans from geists, beings that prey on people's souls. Sent by Them to aid her is Aldran, a psyven; through the bond forged on their first meeting, Aldran can pass his magic to Ras for her to use against the geists. Only those bonded with psyvens can fight the geists, as a psyven's magic is the one magic that is truly effective against them.
But stories are told to children to placate fears and soothe nightmares. Ras has to learn that Aldran and living as a khertan are not what she expected and that the danger is very real.
While she adjusts to her new life, she and Aldran begin to discover all is not as it seems; however, realising and accepting the truth is not easy and ultimately, in the end, is it worth it?

Ras opened her eyes her stomach demanding that it needed food. With a groan, she turned over to the table by her bed to see if she would be able to get by herself. Aldran was asleep in the other bed, his breathing easily heard, and Ras was glad that he hadn't tried to stay up for the entire night (or maybe he had, and he'd only just fallen asleep).

On the table was another cup filled with water; breakfast must have already passed with how bright the sun was, and Ras wondered how long it would be until lunch. She pulled herself into a sitting position and was able to grab and drink from the cup without much difficulty.

Ras thought about attempting to sleep again, but she dismissed it. While her body was still tired and sore from everything that had happened the day before (had she really nearly slept for an entire day?) her mind was clear and wanted something to do. Not that she knew exactly what, but it definitely did not want to continue sleeping.

So, what then? She could attempt to find some food by herself, if she was able to walk, but did she want - Ras sighed, tugging at her hair. It was no use being pessimistic about people's attitude towards her, especially if she was going to be experiencing it for however long. And maybe she'd find a place or someone who didn't treat her or Aldran as people on a pedestal.

Ras pulled the blanket away from her and swung her legs over the side, letting the word settle down again after the sudden movement. She glanced at the back of Aldran's head, seeing a pointed ear poke out from his hair. She should probably wake him up, let him know that she was leaving the room - if he woke up and didn't find her... She had a guess he would start panicking, if she knew him well enough by now.

She hummed as she tapped her toes of the floor, letting them get used to the cold. She didn't know how long she would be (though, it wouldn't be long since she had a feeling she would tire herself far too quickly), nor did she know when Aldran would awaken, but...

There was a knock at the door, drawing Ras away from her thoughts. Aldran didn't move, which made Ras' lips twitch in humour, but she eased herself off the bed and stood up.

While her walking wasn't steady, but was at least decent enough that she could move quickly - she just hoped she wouldn't trip over her feet again and thwack her head off the door when she tried to open it.

On the other side of the door was a wizened woman with a head of pure white hair, her back hunched over, but she looked at Ras with clear -if tired- eyes. "I see that you're up," the woman rasped, and Ras nodded, suddenly becoming reminded of Lesten but she wasn't a khertan -there wasn't a psyven nearby, and she wasn't wearing a khertan pendant either- so she probably truly was as old as she appeared.

"Uh, come in?" Ras offered, holding the door open for her.

The older woman nodded, and then shuffled into the room. Aldran woke up when Ras shut the door, and he stared at the woman in confusion before sliding out of his bed.

"No, no," the woman said, waving a wrinkled hand. "You need your rest - I'll try not to take up much of your time."

The women eased herself into one of the available chairs with a sigh, and Ras stood awkwardly to the side, not exactly sure what to do or where to sit.

"Sit, sit, go on." The woman gazed at her with mirth in her eyes as Ras moved to sit on her bed. "You haven't been doing this very long, have you?" It wasn't so much a question as a statement that the woman already knew the answer to.

"No, we haven't," Ras said quietly, frowning at her hands. Was it really that obvious? "This is the first time we've done this."

"And you did very well," the woman said gently. "Ah, where are my manners - you help free us from those Godsdammed geists and I don't even introduce myself!" She shook her head, adjusting her shawl. "I'm Tevio, the elder of Sous."

"I'm Ras."

"Aldran."

"Hm." Tevio peered at Ras. "That's not a common girl's name."

Ras grimaced. "I...changed it. I didn't like the name I was given."

"I see." Ras didn't look back at her, just in case she saw the same expression she used to see on her mother's face when she despaired after Ras had done another thing that she shouldn't have done, because she was female.

Tevio shook her head. "Ah, but we're getting off track, and I said that I wouldn't bother you for long. My apologies.

"Ceilha and Dracer are still resting for the moment, though they have woken up a few times," Tevio told them, straightening out her sleeves. "As for the geists..."

Ras' stomach dropped. There were more?

"We only ever saw four," -Ras breathed a sigh of relief- "and they kept us herded in like cattle." Tevio shook her head, her white hair waving. "They knew when one of us tried to escape -they could smell us, I suppose; track our souls- and they used that person as their next meal, to show us the futility of the action.

"The first thing they destroyed was the teleportation circle," Tevio said quietly. "That was before we knew they had arrived, but already we were worried, because who would do such a thing against the Gods?" Tevio took a deep breath. "After that was where we housed the carrier pigeons, and it was then we knew that we were being cut off. Han... He tried to leave by horseback, to carry a message to Jonset so that you could aid us but..." Tevio closed her eyes.

"They caught him as he passed the tree marking the edge of the village - they just lifted him right of his horse from a tree branch and fed on him right there and then."

"The horses were obviously their next targets, and they did that in front of us, scaring them until they bolted."

Wait... "But if they scared the horses..." Ras said quietly.

Tevio nodded, understanding what she was asking. "They only eat human souls, nothing else."

Ras had never really considered if the geists could have another diet, but there had been one part of her that had hoped that the fighting didn't have to happen. But it didn't look as though it could be like that.

And Ras had been to drawn into what Tevio had been saying to realise what it meant. "The teleportation circle was destroyed?" she said uneasily.

"Yes, it was." Tevio saw her expression, but then smiled. "We were able to gather up the horses before they escaped and someone left this morning for Balisk, the next village over, to seek a mage."

And what happens if Balisk was also ensnared by geists?

Ras' stomach decided then that it would not be ignored any longer and growled.

Ras flushed while Tevio chuckled. "And again I'm proving to be a very bad host - I'll send someone over with food," she said as she stood up. Tevio waved her hands again, motioning Ras and Tevio to stay seated when they were about to stand up and help.

"You two need your rest, and it would be unfair of me to make you do anything."

Ras didn't think helping an old woman up onto her feet was something that required much energy, but her body unfortunately disagreed, and Tevio shot a pointed look at Aldran when he continued to get off his bed. It was enough to make him sit back down with his head ducked, his tail unmoving. Tevio had clearly raised some unruly children.

Tevio waved goodbye to them while she shut the door behind her and Ras sighed, slouching once the door was closed.

So they wouldn't be able to get back to Winolock from here either. And that wasn't the only thing pressing on her mind.

"Dammit," she said, shaking her head. "When I was told that the geists were smart…" It had clearly been planned, to make sure that the villagers of Sous wouldn't be able to get away or get aid either. Ras had always assumed that the geists were mindless monsters, but hearing them speak and plan… "I'm going to ask Ceilha and Dracer about the geists," Ras said aloud. "If I get distracted again at the wrong time…" Next time, there might not be someone willing to distract the geist.

Aldran nodded, his tail flicking more freely again. "I don't know that much about the geists," Aldran admitted, his face concentrated, and Ras tilted her head at him in puzzlement. She hadn't thought to ask Aldran, since Ceilha was more experienced but still…

"Weren't you trained to fight the geists?"

Aldran gave her a wide-eyed stare. "Why would you think that?"

"Because…I thought-" Ras frowned, seeing the familiar pattern of her thoughts. She sighed, realising her mistake. "From the stories - they tell of the geists living with the Gods and being sent by Them to help the chosen khertan."

"Oh." Aldran looked away to stare out the window, his tail tapping the bed. "I don't remember anything before I met you. I think…I was born then? I…" He pursed his lips, his gaze turning to the floor.

"You were born-" Ras spluttered in disbelief, gaping at him. "You're three days old? But how do you know how to talk, how to-" She shook her head. If Aldran was created by the Gods –which they all were, but it had been a long time since humans had first been created- then it wasn't so surprising that he already knew how to do the basic things, if the Gods had gifted him with the knowledge of it.

Ras sighed, shaking her head. "I really don't know anything about khertan, psyvens or geists."

Aldran tilted his head at her, his gaze conflicted. "But you've only just started…"

"I know," Ras said, closing her eyes, "but if I'm naïve of…everything!" She sighed again. "But I can't cram too much information all at once either, in case I forget important details."

There was another knock at the door, and Ras glanced at Aldran, who looked at it curiously. He got to his feet, his tail waving to keep his balance, and opened the door.

"I'm here to give you lunch?" The voice was female and softly spoken, and when Aldran opened the door fully to let her in, Ras could see a ducked head over the tray laden with food as the woman scuttled in. She quickly placed the tray on the table, her long braid twitching with every movement she made, and after she had brushed her hand on her dress, she peered at Ras through her hair.

"Is there anything else that you require?"

Not treating me as if I'm a person to be revered, one part of Ras thought dryly, but the woman didn't appear to be scared or awestruck in the very least, more respectful.

Ras shook her head. "Thank you for bringing us it."

"It was my pleasure," the woman said, her lips curling into a smile. "I hope I get to meet you again in the future."

She left as Ras sat blinking after her. Ras hoped she wouldn't – if she did, that mean that this village had been attacked by geists again.

They ate lunch in relative silence, focusing on filling their stomach rather than filling the quiet. They would have a lot of time together to talk.

After they had finished, there was another knock at the door, and Ras looked at it wryly. There really was a lot of people coming to visit them.

Aldran had already been on his feet, setting the plates on the table, so he went over to open it.

There wasn't an introduction, and Ras had already guessed who it was on the other side of the door before Ceilha and Dracer walked in. They greeted her with a nod, and while they initially appeared to be all right, Ras could see their slightly slumped shoulders, the dark shadows under their eyes, the way their eyes weren't quite so open. She wondered if that was how she and Aldran looked.

"So how are you two feeling after your first day fighting the geists?" Ceilha asked dryly as she sat on one of the chairs, Dracer taking the other one.

Ha. "Exhausted," Ras said, heartfelt. She didn't feel so drained anymore, but her muscles were still protesting from the horse ride to Sous.

"We're not surprised," Ceilha said, shaking her head. "This is the biggest group of geists we've ever seen working together so don't worry – you won't be running into anything like that any time soon."

"It was just your luck that not only did we have geists that knew to destroy the teleportation circle, but there was a second, bigger group as well," Dracer added, a sympathetic smile on her face.

So were the geists spreading this information amongst them? Ras wondered.

"But it's good that it happened," Aldran said quietly, his head bowed, his tail curling in on itself. "If we hadn't come here, the geists would have…"

Ras sighed, nodding her head. That was a very good point.

"You two should continue resting," Ceilha advised. "You've used a lot of magic over the last two days and it can take a while to recover from it. It'll be a while before we can get back anyway."

Even while Ceilha was saying that, Ras could feel her eyes begin to droop, now that her belly was full, and seeing that, Ceilha and Dracer both got to their feet again.

Ras wanted to protest –they'd just arrived, and if they were as tired as she and Aldran were, then they should be reserving their strength also- but before she'd been able to make a sound, Ceilha and Dracer were already gone.

With a sigh, she shared a look at Aldran, who stared sleepily back, a small smile on his face.

But resting really was all that she was capable of doing right now. Shaking her head, Ras crawled beneath her blanket again, and after a few heartbeats of staring at the wall, she drifted to sleep.

"And maybe she'd find a place or someone who didn't treat her or Aldran as people on a pedestal. "
Hopefully.

"I...changed it. I didn't like the name I was given."
Is Ras a boy's name? (is liking her more already). Her previous name was Shanras, right?

"and they used that person as their next meal, to show us the futility of the action. "
*shudders*

"they tell of the geists living with the Gods and being sent by Them to help the chosen khertan"
Do you mean psyvens?

"You're three days old?"
XD

Why am I getting the feeling that there is a big geist conspiracy or something?

"Hopefully."
Yeeep.

"Is Ras a boy's name?"
Yeah, she was called Shanras before. :) 'Ras' is the shortened version, but I'm not sure if it's masculine or just strange. *thinks through a couple of examples* Ash from Ashley, Tom from Thomas, Bella from Isabella (though, Ashley is interesting because that used to be a masculine name). Hmm. 'Ras' may be either a not-name, or a unisex name. And I think unisex names may get you a strange look, since your name should be either feminine or masculine. *think think* Which doesn't explain why the other characters haven't batted an eyelid at Ras' name (Though Lesten and Ceilha are more worldly? That might help? Whereas Tevio is more stuck in the traditional ways? Hmmmmmm)

"Do you mean psyvens?"
...
Oh WOW that's an epic typo there. *facepalm* Nearly swapping character names is bad enough, but swapping geists with anything makes for fun images. XD;;;

"Why am I getting the feeling that there is a big geist conspiracy or something?"
*laughs*

"since your name should be either feminine or masculine."
Well, I guess that depends on the culture, right? Over here we have names that used to be feminine or masculine, but are now considered unisex (my name used to be masculine XD )

"Oh WOW that's an epic typo there. *facepalm* Nearly swapping character names is bad enough, but swapping geists with anything makes for fun images. XD;;;"
Yes it does. Very fun images (gods sending geists to help khertans? As a challenge for their goldfish?)

Evil laugh or just a laugh?

"Well, I guess that depends on the culture, right?"
So much. And since I'm the person developing the culture... ;____; *reads what I'd typed* Whoops. The 'your' in 'since your name should be either feminine or masculine', I was meaning that's what it looks like it's developing into in the Chosen 'verse, not Earth. XD;;;

I think my name used to be masculine? The root meaning of my name definitely doesn't seem like it though. XDD; *looks it up* Yep, used to be masculine, and is a last name (which I knew) but didn't realise it was for a specific place. Cool.

"Yes it does. Very fun images (gods sending geists to help khertans? As a challenge for their goldfish?)"
Bwahahaha! XDDD

"Evil laugh or just a laugh?"
Now I'm just going to be evil and grin at you, not telling you either way. :D
