"That's you done for today," Rebecca told Desmond as he slid off Baby. There was a weird ringing in his ears and he frowned, waiting to see if it would pass.

It didn't, sharpening into the familiar hoofbeats of charging horses, battle cries from the suddenly visible ghosts that clashed against each other in front of him. Sighing, Desmond closed his eyes, but that didn't stop him from hearing them.

"Desmond?" he heard Lucy say. "What's wrong?"

"Nothing – it's just a bit of the bleeding effect," he told her.

Except the world flashing white had never happened before.

"Just calm down!" Who was Lucy yelling at? Had the Templars found them? The world righted itself to reveal Lucy, Rebecca and Shaun on the other side of the room, and Desmond had no idea when he had stepped away from Baby – or why his hidden blade was out, he realised uneasily. "We aren't going to hurt you."

Desmond's stomach clenched, and he hurriedly twisted his wrist to retract the blade – they were staring at him.

"Uh, Lucy…?" he said hesitantly. Several of the lights had been knocked over, making it hard to see, but Desmond had that light headache he normally got when he used the eagle vision. What exactly happened? Except he could guess, and he didn't like what everything was pointing to.

The tenseness from the three other Assassins visibly left, their shoulders sagging.

"Desmond, it's you, isn't it?" Lucy asked carefully, a pole gripped in her hand. There was a bruise already forming on her temple, and Desmond winced at the sight of it.

"Yeah – I…" Words completely failed Desmond. What could he say?

Lucy closed her eyes, letting out a long breath. "It was the bleeding effect, Desmond; you thought you were Altaïr."

That…didn't sound right; he had absolutely no memory of the last few minutes, a complete blank instead of thinking he was someone else.

"You're not going back into the Animus until we can be reasonably sure that isn't going to happen again," Lucy said firmly, setting the pole down gently.

"Hah, no argument from me," Desmond said, hoping his tone was as light, shooting Baby a furtive glance. That had to have been a one-off, right?

He played with the straps of his hidden blade while the others started to set everything right again – he should keep it off until he was sure he wouldn't be possessed again and stab someone…
