"Heeey," Tao said as M-21 opened the front door, "it's been a while since we were the first ones back!" Usually the children were the first to arrive, and even when they went to the PC bang, Raizel-nim was usually there by the time M-21, Tao and Takeo finished work.
"We didn't have to drag you away from the computer," M-21 said with a snort, shoving his keys in his pocket and going in to change his shoes.
"That's because I - huh? Takeo?"
M-21 glanced over at them, frowning at the change in topic. Takeo hadn't moved from the entrance, staring over into the house, his eyes wide.
"Oh... Shit." Tao's voice was soft, and then the two were scrambling to change shoes, Tao using his cables to do it faster.
M-21 whipped his head to look into the entranceway, changing his shoes at the same time. Nothing smelled anything off, and he didn't see - a small white feather caught his attention, smaller than his pinkie. It slid across the floor, caught on a small breeze.
That hadn't flown in with them. Which meant it had already been in the house. The doors and windows had all been locked when they left — had someone broken in?
Takeo was the first one to get his slippers on and when he got to the entranceway, he froze. "Puppy," he said, his voice strained as he strode in, "Frankenstein is going to kill you."
The pup - "Fuck." M-21 had stopped the puppy from chewing Tao's computer cables, but if he'd started destroying something else...
M-21 was the next to get his slippers on and his whole body went cold when he saw the destruction in the living room. There was a blanket of feathers coating the floor, spreading out from the couch. That was the thickest area — there were a couple of empty spots on the floor, like the puppy had decided to roll around in there.
It looked like that was what he'd done, feathered tuffs stuck to the puppy's fur as he wagged his tail at Takeo, sitting in the empty corpse of one of the couch cushions.
When Takeo got a certain distance away, the puppy dropped down to his elbows, tail wagging hard enough to shake his entire body.
M-21 knew that pose. "Dammit, do-" The puppy had already dived into the cushion with a quick bark.
"...At least we don't have to chase him," Tao said, his cables already coming back with the hoover.
The lump inside the cushion was still moving around.
"Yet," M-21 grumbled as Tao patted his shoulder.
"You do the talk, and we'll do the rest." Tao pulled his phone out as Takeo started cleaning up. "Boss shooouldn't be back for another couple hours, but he's probably already sensed something's wrong with the house and is coming over to check."
M-21 winced. It was better if they finished as soon as possible, just in case.
He walked over to the cushion and lifted it up. The puppy wriggled until he popped his head out, his ears pricked in M-21's direction. "Rrr?"
"You can't go in there," he said, pulling the puppy out by the scruff.
The puppy whined until M-21 put him down. He shook himself once he was on the floor again, then glanced at the cushion still in M-21's hand.
"No. And don't rip or tear into this or the couch again," M-21 added, to be as clear as possible.
This time the puppy huffed, but he stayed put, watching M-21.
"All right, found a place! Takeo!"
M-21 looked up in time to see Tao throw an earpiece at Takeo, who caught it on the way out the door.
Tao settled on one of the stools, pulling out his headset. "It's not too far, so we should be done soon."
M-21 nodded. So all they needed to do was make sure the house was feather-free by the time Frankenstein came home. As Tao told Takeo where he needed to go, M-21 started tracking down all the places any wayward feathers could have hidden themselves in.
