Fire Phoenix glided over to the table that Meatbun was sitting on, flapping her wings at the last moment to slow her landing.
Meatbun giggled as she ducked her head and nuzzled his cheek.
"Fire-birdy?"
"Hm?"
"What does it feel like to fly?"
Fire Phoenix paused and then drew her head back as she thought. "It feels like…" She struggled for words. How could she describe what flying felt like, the freedom and weightlessness it gave her, the view it granted her when she was in the sky?
She eventually shook her head, giving up. "I'll show you."
Meatbun's eyes widened. "Really?" He rolled back and forth on the spot, beaming at her.
Instead of answering, Fire Phoenix stretched out her wing to help him up and Meatbun bounced onto her back. After making sure Meatbun wouldn't slip off, Fire Phoenix launched herself from the table.
And nearly fell to the floor because she hadn't put enough power in her initial flap to account for the new weight.
Meatbun didn't mind, and probably thought she'd intended to do that the way he was exclaiming in delight.
When they soared out the window though, Meatbun gasped as Infinite City lay spread out below them, the setting sun turning the sky orange to their right, the bustle of the people underneath them lost to the wind.
They only stayed outside for a few minutes before Fire Phoenix turned around and flew back to the castle, just in case Meatbun peered a little too much off her side and fell off.
Once they were on firm ground again –in this case, a bed that had been right next to the window- Meatbun hopped off her, laughing all the while.
"That's what flying feels like?"
Fire Phoenix nodded, feeling fond pleasure at Meatbun's happiness.
Meatbun's grin widened. "Can we do that again soon?"
She extended a wing to cover him, nestling down next to him. "Of course."
