M-21 sank down onto his bed, just focusing on his breathing. What M-24 had said... He couldn't be right, could he? Had he really changed that much?

"Hey," Tao said softly as he came into M-21's room, Takeo only a step behind.

He glanced up at them, mustering up the energy for a tired smile. He grimaced a second later, knowing it wasn't the same as the one he usually used with them - and the smile dropped completely when M-21 realised what he had been thinking. That was true though, wasn't it? He didn't used to smile like this - he didn't even smile, showing something that was more aptly described as a 'twist of the lips' to people.

And... He bowed his head, remembering what he and M-24 had done when they first came to South Korea. They may have made a pact to do whatever was in their power to live for another day, but M-21 didn't think he could do that anymore.

And the reason why they'd made that promise... He'd set that to the side, deciding that the children's well-being meant more than finding out his own name.

That - how had he never noticed before this? It was obvious now that he looked (and it had been pointed out before; he'd just never thought about it too hard, assuming that was just another version of small talk) and -

Someone nudged him in the ribs.

M-21 blinked, dragging his attention away from his thoughts. It was unsurprisingly Tao who had done it.

"You need to rest," Takeo murmured.

Tao nodded, a small understanding smile on his face. "You haven't slept at all, have you?"

M-21 didn't answer, just closing his eyes - there was no point; they knew him.

"Come on," Tao said, tugging him back, and M-21 let him. "You're thinking enough for all three of us at the moment."

Takeo snorted. "That's easy if you're in the equation."

"Oi," Tao said, turning back to Takeo, sniffing in fake offense, "I do think, thanks."

"Not at home," M-21 and Takeo said at the same time and Tao squawked.

As M-21 allowed himself to be distracted by Takeo and Tao's antics, he thought that maybe, change wasn't always bad.

Written for the prompt, 'not that person anymore.

I'd originally had Tao poking M-21 in the forehead. XDD He'd probably do that - in a less serious situation.
