M-21 glanced at the dog that was sitting across the street as he, Takeo and Tao made their way towards the school. Again. He'd noticed it some time last week, and it was on the third day of seeing it that he realised that it didn't have a collar or anyone who stood nearby that it seemed to be with. The dog was average sized, with the dusky coat like a husky, even if the shape didn't seem right.
A stray? It didn't seem like one though.
"Maybe he likes you," Tao mused, peering in the same direction. "Because of..." He didn't finish his sentence, but he didn't have to - they knew what he meant.
M-21 just shook his head, used to Tao's teasing. Maybe. Other dogs were curious of him, to the bewilderment of whoever was on the other end of the leash.
He set thoughts about the dog away as they neared the school.
* * *
The dog had started to follow them home. Or tried to. Every time they spotted it, it paused, then slunk away to reappear at another date.
"I think he really likes you," Tao commented as they watched the dog duck away again.
M-21 didn't comment. And he also felt like he knew what Tao was going to suggest next.
* * *
"We can't adopt it," Takeo said flatly, rolling his eyes over his gun parts.
"Why not?" Tao asked as he played with something on his pocket computer.
"Frankenstein," M-21 and Takeo said in unison.
"We could ask-" Tao's words were drowned out by the pillows that suddenly went flying his way.
* * *
M-21 grunted, hearing Takeo's covering fire smash into the Union grunt's body, rolling out the way before his axe cracked his skull open.
"Number 4!"
"Unhurt," he reported, transforming his nails to claws, feeling the familiar itch as fur sprouted across the back of his hands.
There was only a second's pause as Takeo's bullets distracted the grunt again, and M-21 used that to slash right across his torso, leaving bloody trails in his wake.
The grunt screamed and -
There was suddenly a snarl to their left, and M-21 backed up a step, his head snapping the source, prepared to defend himself.
It was the dog again, deceptively docile, considering how it was lounging on top of a second unconscious grunt, a gun laying some distance away.
"Damn, I thought he was alone."
"It's fine, Number 1," M-21 said, staring at the dog in bemusement. Cautiously, he approached the dog, not sure what to expect.
The dog perked up at that, wagging its tail slowly in broad strokes. The dog smoothly rose to its feet, shaking itself from nose to tail-tip for a second before walking up to meet him.
"Huh."
"So we're adopting him."
M-21 breathed out a chuckle, and the dog cocked its head at him, making grumbling sounds as he petted it between the ears. "We warn Frankenstein first."
"Done that already," Tao said, with the air of someone who had just been told to do something they knew intimately. Which, considering this was Frankenstein...
"Do you want to come home with us?" M-21 murmured, still petting the dog - and he ignored Tao's snicker when the dog nodded.
* * *
The dog had trotted beside them easily as they made their way home, not wandering away for a second.
Tao had already come up with ten different names they could call it, all of which had been shot down by M-21 and Takeo, the dog chiming in sometimes as well, to their amusement.
Frankenstein was waiting for them when they got back, fussing over them, making sure they were unhurt. When he saw the dog though, his gaze suddenly changed, and everyone froze, recognising his interested look.
The dog stared back at him, not backing down.
"Ah, come in!" Frankenstein said, motioning them inside, closing the door behind them.
They did, a little more hesitant this time. They stopped as soon as they reached the living room, turning back to Frankenstein, who was staring down at the dog in amusement, a hand on his hip.
"If you could reveal yourself now," Frankenstein said, his voice sickly sweet and M-21 froze, both at his tone, and at the fake smile he wore - it was the one he used when he had to be polite, but not the one that promised violence.
The dog huffed, stepping away from them and then -
M-21's eyes widened as the dog changed, its form shifting to that of a human. A human woman. It only took a few seconds before the transformation stopped, and the woman straightened herself, staring at them levelly.
