Summary: "So you think he wants to meet us to tell us not to hurt Seira and Regis?" Tao wondered, taking another sip of hir drink.
Notes: So I've still got Adapt to Live on the brain sooo have some snippets of stuff that I'm reasonably sure that would actually show up in the sequel. That I won't be writing, because I have no idea what should be in it other than what I've got at the start. The middle scene was supposed to show up in Adapt to Live.
Timeline makes more sense with canon!Noblesse's timeline than what I made oops, haha. Maybe I should just make it the canon years, hmmm.

The kid was fidgeting with a napkin. Not that Tao was surprised, seeing how ze, the kid, and Boss were meeting Regis' grandfather.

They were currently sitting around a cafe table. It was public enough, but out the way enough to not be crowded so they could talk fairly freely.

Tao sipped hir coffee as the kid sniffed their hot chocolate. Ze had a feeling that was Seira and Regis' influence, seeing how neither ze or Boss had drank hot chocolate around them, or mentioned it either. The kid could have picked it up from all the ads around them though - they picked things up quickly, given the chance.

It was warm inside at least, as snow continued to fall outside. It was better than rain. For once Tao was happy at the weather dropping below freezing, hah.

"So you think he wants to meet us to tell us not to hurt Seira and Regis?" Tao wondered, taking another sip. It was a little pointless since that was their decision, but it showed that Regis' grandfather cared about them at least. "I thought that conversation was usually done by the parents?" Or were they out the country right now? It wouldn't be surprising if they were seeing how spread out the Loyard and Landegre families were across the planet.

The kid's face scrunched up, like it usually did when they were trying to figure something out. It made it easier to know when the kid was confused, and Tao waited to see if they would ask. If they didn't, Tao wouldn't push, and neither would Boss; better to let them come to them for questions. It was probably the kid just trying to work out the difference between parents and grandfathers and how that related to Regis.

"I rather hope it's not if we have 'intentions' towards them," Boss said with a sigh.

Tao snickered at that. Regis' grandfather had no worries if that was the case - angels and demons had no interest in each other, let alone humans. With the way angels were created, having an impulse to make babies wasn't factored in.

The three of them had arrived early, just in case, so now all they had to do was wait for Regis' grandfather to arrive.

* * *

Regis' grandfather was bigger than Tao expected. Ze couldn't see the resemblance in their features, but ze could certainly feel the resemblance in their aura. And that was one thought away from forming the lance they were famed for.

Regis' grandfather was also not happy. In the slightest.

"You're the ones that Seira and Regis are going to travel with?" he asked, not taking a seat with them, eyeing each one of them in turn. Every muscle in his body was stiff.

Boss nodded, one elbow leaning on the table. "You wished to speak with us in person?"

"I did." Geujtel seized them all up at a glance. Which he'd already done when he'd first entered the cafe. "I don't want to find Regis and Seira dead."

Boss nodded again. "Of course. We'll make sure-"

"I wasn't finished," Gejutel hissed, his aura flaring.

Tao frowned, curling a wing around the kid. They weren't used to that yet and Tao didn't want Gejutel's aura ruffling the kid when they were still trying to find their feet.

Gejute's lips were a thin line, and he'd gotten even tenser. "Our families have met before."

Well, yeah...? It hadn't been too often, which could have been a good thing for hir and Boss because trying to explain why someone was trying to kill them to the police would have brought up some weird questions. Though ze and Boss should have been the ones being protected, it was just too much hassle anyway to bother with. The two of them usually ran away from them. There was no point fighting, not when there was too much chance of being hurt and really, the only way to stop a Loyard and a Landegre was to either imobilise them, or kill them. They were only doing their job, so Tao couldn't fault them that really.

"Do you remember a Landegre and Loyard pair you met a decade ago?" Gejutel asked, scrutinising them all again.

Boss' eyebrows raised and they straightened in their chair. "...Yes. They had attended some of my lectures."

Tao's stomach dropped, hir blood going cold. Wariness and dread grew in hir stomach. Why was he bringing them up?

"They were Seira's and Regis' fathers." Oh... fuck. Past tense. "They are no longer of this world."

Tao closed hir eyes as ze heard, "I'm sorry for your loss."

"You should be!" Gejutel snapped and Tao's eyes flew open again. Eh? "It's because of you they're dead. After meeting you, they wanted to talk with demons first to check if they were like you!

"And now it seems like you're doing the same with their children!"

Fuck, no wonder Gejutel was pissed off at them.

* * *

Gejutel frowned. "But you said you were looking for your Lord?" Gejutel eyed all of them.

Boss nodded. "Yes."

Gejutel pursed his lips together, and then leaned over to the bag that he had brought with him. "We have passed this heirloom down through the generations. It was handed to us when we were given the powers to fight demons. We were to keep this until our families met an 'unlikely person trying to find the Lord in the physical realm.' Demons wanting to find God is as unlikely as it gets." He snorted. He pulled something out of the bag. It was about palm length, just long enough to be covered by Gejutel's hand. Tao could see just enough of it that it was made out of wood. What was it?

He lifted his hand away. Boss glanced at it, and then jerk back, their eyes wide as their wings snapped out.

"Boss?" What was wrong with it?

Boss shot Tao a sharp look, not moving towards it, and Tao didn't understand their reaction. Boss didn't was to touch it?

Ze stood up and peered at the box. As soon as ze saw what was engraved on the lid, hir jaw dropped, hir eyes widening at the sight. It was a circle with a cross going through the centre of it at an angle. How had...

"What is it?" the kid asked, tilting their head at it, frowning.

Jeez, had Crombell scrubbed everything off the walls? "It's the Lord's symbol, kid." Something like that didn't just drop from Heaven to the physical realm to be picked up by just anybody.

"Where did you get this?" Boss demanded, whirling to Gejutel.

Gejutel narrowed his eyes, crossing his arms. "Hmph. I just told you that."

"Fine," Boss said, their teeth gritted. "When."

"Over twenty generations ago," Gejutel said.

"Over a thousand years?" Boss pressed.

"Far more than that," Gejutel said.

Tao looked at the human doubtfully. Human recording of evens tended to be a little uneven in accuracy, but... If Gejutel was right, then the Loyard and Landegre hadn't received their powers and gift when Boss' Lord had disappeared.

They'd gotten it before the barrier had been made.

Had Boss' Lord known what was going to happen all that time ago and made preparations...?

Tao stared at the box, wondering what exactly was inside it.
