Kentas moved through the streets, his senses extended. It was quiet to his ears, but there were always demons around, preying on mortals.
There.
It was faint, the demon trying to mask their aura. It was a subtlety demons didn’t have. Did they know he was in the area? He hadn’t fought any demons yet, but maybe some had sensed his approach and spread the word.
If that was the case… Kentas quietened his own aura, only allowing himself enough to sense the direction of the demon.
The streets were dark, sunrise a few hours away. There were very few mortals around, which would make it easier to find the one the demon was hunting.
The feeling of wrongness skittered over Kentas’ skin, ruffling his wings. The demons were close.
He looked around, spotting a lone mortal, and there in the shadows hanging above them was a demon, looking ready to pounce.
Dammit, he was too far to get there in time, and why hadn’t the mortal’s guardian angel done anything yet? Their angel should have sensed the demon’s approach far before the demon had gotten that close.
The demon pounced as Kentas lunged forward, his wings taking him further. Too slow. He wasn’t going to m-
A blast of light, something wolflike exploding from the mortal and Kentas halted, not sure what he was seeing.
The demon was gone by the time Kentas’ vision cleared. The wolf…aura was still there, hovering above the mortal, before it shrank down and disappeared.
What…just happened? That hadn’t been a guardian angel. It wasn’t demonic either. Kentas didn’t recognise that aura or sense of power.
The mortal looked over and their eyes met.
Kentas jerked back in shock, before he shook his head. No. The mortal couldn’t have seen him. But it had been a surprise to even have someone seem like they’d acknowledged his presence.
“Huh,” the mortal said, eyes going over Kentas’ wings. “You’re new. An angel?” The mortal snorted, turning away. “Whatever.”
What?
The mortal could…see him? But mortals couldn’t do that! And mortals couldn’t protect themselves from demons. That was why they had guardian angels in the first place.
…Or should have.
The mortal was walking away, and after only a small hesitation, Kentas followed. He needed to find out more about this mortal.
