M-21 was reading a book in the living room. Which wasn’t unusual, but… “I thought you were looking after Tao?” Takeo said, looking around. Leaving an instinctual Tao to his own devices meant he gravitated towards somewhere where he could get hurt or made a mess. Or both.

M-21 pointed towards the corner of the room without lifting his head.

Ah.

There was a cardboard box there, with a small furry head poking out over the rim before it ducked away again, the box rustling.

“He’s been entertained for the past thirty minutes,” M-21 said. “I think there’s a toy in there with him. It’s that or he’s been chasing his tail the entire time. Same thing really.”
