“Hmmm.”
It was a sound Tao made often, and Takeo glanced at him. Tao was gazing at M-21, who had transformed into his wolf form and curled up next to the table. “What are you thinking?”
“Weeell,” Tao drew out, lifting a hand to tap a finger against his jaw, “we know M doesn’t like collars.”
“…Yes?” Tao had tried that. Once. It had stayed on long enough for Tao to pull his hands away after putting it on.
“But what happens if he runs for whatever reason? People’ll need to know what to call him!”
“Not where to take him back?”
“Knowing what to call him is way more important, Takeo!” Tao waved a hand. “And he knows the way home.”
“But if he ran away…?”
“He probably had a good reason for it.” Tao nodded. “Or he was even more instinctual than usual.
“Microchips are out -never want one in me ever again, eugh- so I’m thinking…” Tao perked up, sucking in a breath. “That’s it!”
Before Takeo could ask (or try to change Tao’s mind), Tao was already gone.
M-21′s ear had only flicked in Tao’s direction before pointing forward again, and sometimes, it was good not knowing that something was about to happen.
* * *
Tao stayed in his room for an hour before coming out again. “Done!” He was waving…something in his hand.
“Hey, M, come lookit what I made ya!”
M-21 trotted over and Takeo peered over while Tao wrapped the…handkerchief? around M-21′s neck and tied it into a loose knot.
“There, is this one better?”
M-21 huffed, sitting down to scratch at it and shaking his head, but he wasn’t growling this time and he settled down again.
“Yesss!” Tao grinned and ruffled M-21′s head.
Takeo got up to see properly what Tao had made. It was silver cloth and there had been something stitched across it.
Oh.
Of course he’d done that.
Tao had stitched ‘No 4′ into the handkercheif.
“I really should have expected that…”
