Summary: Ras has just been chosen by the Gods to protect humans from geists, beings that prey on people's souls. Sent by Them to aid her is Aldran, a psyven; through the bond forged on their first meeting, Aldran can pass his magic to Ras for her to use against the geists. Only those bonded with psyvens can fight the geists, as a psyven's magic is the one magic that is truly effective against them.
But stories are told to children to placate fears and soothe nightmares. Ras has to learn that Aldran and living as a khertan are not what she expected and that the danger is very real.
While she adjusts to her new life, she and Aldran begin to discover all is not as it seems; however, realising and accepting the truth is not easy and ultimately, in the end, is it worth it?

When was she going to start remembering to think about what she was saying first? "I didn't mean that," she repeated, because it had to be said. "I was going to-" She sighed, closing her eyes. "I'd wanted it to be lighthearted." With a twist of her lips, she continued. "I was meaning to say, that I wanted to change the 'put off dying' part of my promise to 'not be hurt', because while I don't want to die, being hurt is not the best condition to be either."

Aldran didn't say anything, though his breathing evened out, which Ras took as a success, then. His tail started to move again, curling on top of the bed.

"I...find those terms agreeable," he said slowly, and Ras huffed, feeling her throat itch because of it.

"Then we're agreed - my new terms are that I will try my best to not be hurt or die for as long as possible." It just felt fitting, re-doing it in the manner it had originally been said.

"The atmosphere didn't seem as tense as it had been before, and they just sat there, enjoying each other's company and physical presence.

There was eventually a knock at the door, startling Ras from the dozing off she hadn't realised she had been doing.

"Are you two awake?" came Ceilha's voice.

She glanced at Aldran, who peered back at her, curious. With a small shrug, Ras hefted herself up on the bed even further so she wasn't slouching as much as she had been, and then called out, "Yes."

Ceilha and Dracer walked in, and seeing Ras and Aldran on the bed, Ceilha smiled with sympathy, while Dracer seemed to bite back a chuckle.

"How are you two feeling?" Ceilha asked, wandering closer and then perching herself on Aldran's bed, Dracer barely a step behind.

"A lot better," Ras answered, since it was true. She wasn't at her best, but now she could move around far more easier than the day before.

"Good," Ceilha said nodding. "Just rest for now – we're to stay here for another day or so, and then we'll be heading for Saus."

Ras frowned, recognising the name. If they were in Jonset, then Saus was another village a few miles away.

"Has there been a geist attack there?" she asked.

"No," Dracer answered, her tail tip moving in small circles. "It's the closest place from here that has a teleportation circle."

Ah. Of course. There was still that problem that had to be solved. "Does that mean this village could be cut off if there was a geist attack?" she asked, realising the problem.

Ceilha shook her head. "As soon as we get back to Winolock, I'll inform a mage to come here and they will make a new one."

And that was good to hear. "So, we're waiting until we're fully rested before travelling?"

"Partially," Ceilha said, her eyes drifting, "though the other reason is that it's to make sure that they were the only geists in this area. They feed every other day or so; we stay until that time is passed, and then move on."

Ras nodded, and then frowned, remembering the events of the day before. "Is it normal for geists to work together?" At this rate, she should probably find a book of all the facts that a khertan and psyven should know and another book detailing the differences between what everyone thought was truth and the actual truth of the situation. If such a book existed. And if she would be able to find it.

Ceilha's expression grew distant, her lips pursing slightly. "It's not common," she said slowly, "but it's not uncommon either."

Ras sighed, adjusting the way she was sitting. She supposed she should have realised that would be the answer (though, if she had been really pessimistic, she would have assumed that geists were always in pairs or more, seeing how everything else seemed to be as difficult as it could be).

"So, for the moment," Ras said, wanting to change the subject, "we wait?"

Ceilha nodded. "We wait."

Thankfully, there wasn't another attack, and Ras slowly regained her strength. Not completely, but enough to be moderately comfortable moving around. Her throat though, stayed stubbornly the same, and Ras suddenly became loathe to leave the room until she had to, people's eyes following her and pinpointing to her neck as soon as they say it - that meant they weren't meeting her eyes, of course.

"I should bandage it," Ras declared, half in disgust, half in frustration after a small walk. With her strength returning, the walls of the inn began to seem confining, to the point where she had to go outside. "At least that way, people can wonder about it, rather than seeing full well what it is!"

Aldran tilted his head at her, frowning. It hadn't mattered that Ras had evidence to show the fight against the geists – the villagers covertly stared and whispered about him as well equally, if not more fervently. "It shouldn't be too long until we head out of Jonset, so you won't be at the centre of attention anymore."

"Until we arrive at Sous," Ras shot back dryly.

The tip of Aldran's tail stopped moving. "Ah. Of course."

But it would be good to leave, to not be under anyone else's gaze for the next few hours. She dismissed the thought of bandaging until later – they had no access to bandages (Ras was sure her stained tunic had either been burned, purified, or both), she didn't want to interact with any more of the villagefolk -for a given meaning of 'interact'-, and they were soon to leave anyway.

With nothing to make sure they left behind, Ras and Aldran left the inn.

Ras sighed at the horse nosing around her head like she had a treat hidden in her hair. It was a chestnut , all smooth lines and compact muscle. Ceilha and Dracer had been standing next to the clump of milling horses, talking with who must have been the stablehand.

A quick glance at Aldran revealed he seemed enamoured by the beasts, studying a black one carefully as it snuffled around his palm.

"Don't curl your fingers like that," she advised him lowly, leaning over so not to disturb the other conversation. "It might bite your fingers off."

Aldran's hand promptly straightened out and he stared at the horse in wide-eyed panic, taking a step back. "Why?"

"It mistakes them for something to eat."

Aldran glanced down at his fingers, then back at the horse. With a shaky smile, Aldran patted the horse on the snout and then carefully pulled his hands away from it, keeping them behind his back. The horse wasn't deterred though, and nudged him in the chest instead, as if that would make him change his mind.

While Aldran was accosted by the horse, Ras trying to pull its willful head away, Ceilha and Dracer came over, their lips twitching at the scene unfolding in front of them.

"Can you ride?" Ceilha asked her, while Dracer moved to help with the horse.

"Yes," she grunted, the horse snorting and stamping its hooves when it couldn' t go where it wanted. "It's been a while though," she admitted. She wasn't sure how long it had been since she had been in a saddle of any sort.

"I'm going to assume you don't," Ceilha said, her tone amused, directing her words towards Aldran.

He glanced up, back to petting the horse in the hopes it might settle it now. Which it had, if the contented swish of its tail was anything to go by. "Ride horses?" he asked, peering at the horse in front of him. He shook his head.

"So that means it should be three horses then we need - a remount shouldn't be required," Ceilha mused, patting the horse's flank, "if we don't push them too hard."

Three horses... "Aldran will be doubling with me." And that was a redundant thing to say, because how else would it work? If Aldran had never been on a horse, much less ridden one, leaving him alone on a horse could very easily end in disaster.

"If you're willing to."

Ras nodded without even thinking about it, her thoughts moving away. "He'll have to sit behind me," -clearly, because she was never going to have a chance of seeing past his wide back or over his shoulders- "but it should be all right, so long as we have a good horse." She frowned, glancing where the stablehand had gone. "How much are we paying for these?"

"A lot less than what they would charge anyone else," came the dry answer. "But we aren't taking them far, and they can be brought back easily enough." Ceilha huffed, shaking her head. "I do have a message to pass on though - Sous hasn't been in contact with Jonset for a while, and they were supposed to trade some supplies a while back."

Ras made a sound of acknowledgement. That wouldn't be hard to forget.

"I'll see about these horses then," Ceilha said with a wave of her hand, walking back over to where the stablehand had last been seen.

The horse had finally calmed down a little, after being led away from Aldran. Every so often it would lift its head hopefully and glance across the field to Aldran.

"I hope we don't get that one," Ras said out loud and Aldran let loose a weak chuckle. "We wouldn't get anywhere."

Ceilha reappeared shortly after, three horses in tow. They were already saddled, and Ceilha gave the biggest one's reins to her. "This is Speckles," she told Ras, and Ras could see why, its grey coat dappled with white.

This could be interesting, Ras mused as she took the reins, patting the horse on the snout, seeing Aldran edge away so he was behind her shoulder. Speckles' only reaction was a flick of an ear and a small push, which was reassuring. Staring up at it, she said, "We're going to be your riders for the next few hours - I hope we aren't too troublesome for you."

She got a small bob in return, which Ras took for agreement.

Speckles lifted –Ras did a quick check- his head to blink inquisitively at Aldran, his ears pricked forward.

Ras tilted her head back to look up at Aldran, who was staring nervously at Speckles.

"He shouldn't bite you," Ras reassured him, walking around Speckles, trailing a hand over him, "so long as you don't put your hands near his mouth."

Aldran didn't look that convinced, following her. Ras took a breath, slid her foot into the stirrup and hefted herself up, adjusting herself when Speckles shifted under her, adjusting to her weight. When Speckles settled down, his ears twisted towards like as if waiting for instructions, Ras held her hand out to Aldran, who stared back at it doubtfully.

"This is the only way we can travel." There was a wariness in his voice, but also a mild hint of already resigning to the idea.

"Yes." Ras kept her hand out.

With a small sigh -and a quick look at Speckles' face to make sure he didn't have the horse's attention, except Aldran did- Aldran took her hand and after cautiously following Ras' example of where to put his foot, he swung up behind her. They stayed there for a few seconds, waiting as Speckles took a few steps to the side, but didn't try to free himself of them, Aldran stiff behind her.

"How do I...stay on?" Aldran asked, once Speckles had eventually stopped moving.

She should have told him that before he got on… "You have to bring your arms to the front of me-"

Aldran did so while she talked, wrapping his hands around her waist, shuffling in that little bit closer.

"-and grab a hold of the saddle horn," she finished dryly.

She felt him freeze at her words. "I – uh, sorry." He peered around her head, his arms loosening. Ras grasped one hand and placed it on the saddle horn. When both his hands were in the right place, Ras directed Speckles to start moving to where Ceilha and Dracer were already mounted and waiting for them.

She felt Aldran tense as soon as Speckles started moving but it didn't seem like he would fall off and he seemed to follow Speckles' movement well. "It's to make sure if you fall off, you won't drag me off as well – we could lose Speckles if that were to happen," she explained, wondering if distracting him was a good idea or not at that particular moment.

"Oh." Aldran relaxed for a second, until Speckles shifting weight under them forced him to adjust accordingly again.

"Use your legs to grip his sides, but not too tightly- it helps," she advised him. Ras wasn't sure if Aldran was doing it, but Speckles didn't suddenly bolt or try to throw them off, so at least Aldran wasn't putting too much pressure on Speckles.

"Thanks…" Aldran said quietly in her ear.

Ras just chuckled. "This is the easy part," she warned him.

"Ready to go?" Ceilha asked them, turning her horse in the direction that they would be riding in.

Ras nodded, doing the same.

Seeing that, Ceilha started with a trot, leading the way.

"We're going to have sore behinds by the end of the day," Ras muttered as she had Speckles follow. At the first few steps, Aldran nearly let go of the saddle as Speckles bounced forward but he corrected himself quickly.

"Is this pace all right?" Ras threw over her shoulder once they had left the village behind, Speckles hitting his stride.

Aldran made a sound that was possibly one of confirmation. Hopefully. "I think so."

"Because we will be going at a faster pace soon enough." Probably as soon as Aldran had become accustomed to trotting. They were currently only slightly faster than walking, and if they wanted to arrive at Sous before sundown, they would definitely have to move faster.

Aldran let loose the air in his lungs. "All right," he eventually said, as they neared the first fork in the road they would have to navigate.

"You're sure?"

"If I never do it, then I'll never become used to it." It sounded like Aldran was quoting someone, and she wondered about the conversations he'd had with Dracer. The next chance they had, she would ask him about it; if she knew exactly what he had to do, it would make things easier for her.

The next time Dracer checked back on them, Ras signalled to go faster. Dracer nodded to say she had gotten her message and then sped to Ceilha's side.

"Hold on tight," Ras said lowly before they had finished talking, Ras instructing Speckles to canter. She felt Aldran tense a second before Speckles burst into action and while he made a startled exclamation when it happened, he clung stubbornly on.

Ceilha and Dracer threw them a grin as they caught up before also instructing their horses to move faster.

Ras just hoped that the weather wouldn't take a turn for the worse before they had shelter.

Hee, pretending to be formal. I guess it's kind of awkward, trying to have a light conversation about death.

Yep

Will it always be like that for them? Doesn't anyone, you know, just TALK to them?

May as well fall back onto something when all else fails. (Aaaand back to the non-sense making again. *facepalm* 'I don't know what to do in this situation! I'll just do [this] instead!')

"Will it always be like that for them? Doesn't anyone, you know, just TALK to them?"
But they've been chosen by the GODS! :O *cough* I think it got slightly better?

""Speckles lifted –Ras did a quick check- his head"
