Chosen [Part 28]
Nov. 28th, 2011 11:37 pmFandom: Original
Summary: Ras has just been chosen by the Gods to protect humans from geists, beings that prey on people's souls. Sent by Them to aid her is Aldran, a psyven; through the bond forged on their first meeting, Aldran can pass his magic to Ras for her to use against the geists. Only those bonded with psyvens can fight the geists, as a psyven's magic is the one magic that is truly effective against them.
But stories are told to children to placate fears and soothe nightmares. Ras has to learn that Aldran and living as a khertan are not what she expected and that the danger is very real.
While she adjusts to her new life, she and Aldran begin to discover all is not as it seems; however, realising and accepting the truth is not easy and ultimately, in the end, is it worth it?

Ras stared at him, not understanding how this conversation was going. "But if…" If she had chosen to forget, but didn't remember ever knowing then… "Magic?" she said hoarsely, unable to wrap her mind around the fact that they were talking about this. "Those memories were sealed from me?" And she had asked for that to be done? That didn't – why would she do that…?
Aldran winced, drawing back and looking away again. "I shouldn't – I shouldn't have told you."
"No," Ras said, shaking her head. "You should have." She should know this.
But then, Aldran knew that she had had her memories taken from her? How long for? How long had he known and kept it from her? …When had her memories been sealed? She remembered everything that had happened, there were no blank spots in her memory – but if magic was involved, the mage may have been able to twist her memories –or add to them- so that there were none.
Ras squeezed her eyed shut, taking a deep breath. Was everything she knew a lie? Were there more things in her memory that she knew to be the absolute truth, but actually weren't?
Aldran glanced at her through the corner of his eyes. "You'll just forget again."
Ras frowned at his words, not quite sure if she understood. "The memory spell is active? If I remember what I've forgotten, the spell will erase my memory of it again?" Had she and Aldran had this conversation before..?
He shook his head, more of his hair falling free. "You'll choose to lose your memories of it again," he said quietly.
That – Ras clenched her hands and took a steadying breath, trying to quash the disheartened feeling in her that was encircling her stomach. "Do you really think I will?"
Aldran's eyes were sad as he nodded, far too certain. "You have already done it once – why wouldn't you do it again if you found out the full truth?"
"…There's more?"
Aldran closed his eyes, looking as if he were in pain. "I…should stop talking."
There was more? What else could there possibly be? What else could there be that would drive her to make sure she forgot? After everything she had learned, she wouldn't want to forget any of it – if anything, it made her want to learn more, to make sure she knew what to expect. What was there that would make her want to bury that truth, to deny that it existed?
