Tao couldn't sleep. He'd tossed and turned for hours, but his brain wouldn't shut off. The code was floating in his mind, but if he tried to work on it now, he'd just make more mistakes.

He didn't really want to sit around and watch movies either.

Another toss, and no, this position wasn't any better, just as warm as where he'd just been lying on because he'd moved from that position less than a minute ago.

Argh!

He kicked off his blanket. He wasn't going to sleep right now so he had to do something else.

His stomach rumbled at the moment, and huh, maybe that's what he should do, Tao thought as he put a hand over his stomach. Get something to eat. That could help.

And maybe he should do it in his nekomata form! That way he got to practice his transformation and tire himself out at the same time! Yes! He should do that.

Tao swung himself out of bed, his feet touching the floor, and he took a breath, closing his eyes as he imagined himself changing into his nekomata form.

When he opened his eyes, he was still on the bed. Whoops. That was something to remember for next time and…huh. Tao's room usually had a soft glow around it thanks to all his tech and their power icons, but with his nekomata eyes it was like the main light was on, everything in perfect clarity.

A little washed out, but clear.

Damn, he hadn't tried to use his form at night before, had he?

He hopped off the bed and spotted his next problem as he neared the door. Namely, the door.

The easiest solution would be to change back and open it with hands, but he was supposed to be tiring himself out and working out his nekomata form. So instead, Tao did a few test hops, checking how much power he could put into his jumps, and once he felt he was ready, he dashed towards the door and launched himself at the handle.

He miscalculated, not giving himself power, and he scrabbled up the rest of the way with his claws.

It was his own room, so Boss wouldn't mind about the scratches there.

He grabbed onto the handle, wrapping his arms around it and oh please oh please, tell him he was heavy enough to drag it down.

As he slid down the handle, cat paws not made to hold things, the handle moved until Tao's ears flicked towards a 'click'.

Yes!

He held on, the door swinging open and then he dropped once it was wide enough. He left his room, his tail high in the air.

The stairs were easy and he bounced down them. So was the living room door, and hmmm, what hadn't been finished last night? Maybe he should try-

Tao whipped around at the sound of skittering claws on tiles approaching him and who – oh. It was the puppy.

They were about the same height, the puppy bigger than him and… This had happened before.

"Heeey, little buddy," Tao called out, and the puppy skidded to a halt at the sound of his voice. Yeah, the puppy had thought he was a stranger.

"It's just me," Tao said, trying to beckon him over with a paw. And, okay, differences in cat and dog body language again, but the puppy should still recognise the gesture from when it was directed at him. Maybe.

The puppy barked, and Tao's ears whipped down. Jeez, that sounded louder than usual; it had to be because everything else was so quiet.

It'd be better if he settled him down before he woke the rest of the house up.

He changed back into his human form and he snickered at how the puppy froze, his eyes going wide. "Told ya it's just me." Tao gestured him over again and picked up the puppy up when he rushed over, petting him.

"Yes, yes, love you too," he said as the puppy stuck his nose into his neck, not keeping still. Probably sniffing to make sure Tao was who he thought he was after that. "I'm getting some food; want some?"

The puppy yipped, looking towards the fridge as they neared it, his tail wagging.

It didn't take long to warm something up and to give the puppy something to eat, and by the time Tao had finished, the puppy was starting to doze in his arms, jerking awake for a few seconds and then falling asleep again.

"I woke you up, didn't I?" he whispered as he walked over to the puppy's basket. "I was the meanie who woke you up in the middle of the night and scared you, wasn't I?" His voice seemed to soothe the puppy, falling completely asleep, and Tao laid him back into his basket.

Once he was done cleaning up after himself, Tao sneaked out and went back to bed, feeling his eyelids getting heavier.

Mmm, warm food really did help to get a person sleepy.

This time, when Tao curled up in bed, he fell asleep without trouble.
