"Ajussi," Shinwoo said, peering at M-21, frowning, and M-21 held back the sigh at the title, "you look worried. Have you done this before?"
'This' being ice skating, M-21's breath freezing in front of his face as he heard laughter around him.
"No," he said as he did up the laces. Tao already had his shoes on and M-21 could see how his walk had changed as he went towards the rink.
"Aah, I see." Shinwoo nodded, but then smiled at him. "It's just like rollerblading, but on ice!"
…M-21 hadn't done that either, but from Shinwoo's tone, if he admitted that, Shinwoo would ask how he didn't know something 'everyone' should know.
"All riiight!" Tao crowed as he stepped out onto the ice, Ik-han beside him. "Now to – wah!" Tao fell on his ass with a yelp. That didn't look promising.
"Hyung!"
Tao started laughing, using the barrier to get back to his feet. "I'm fine!" Tao assured him. "And so's my phone!" he added after he patted himself down.
While Ik-han fussed about him, Tao slung an arm around his shoulders – and nearly made them both fall over. It was Ik-han who kept them upright and with a wave, the two started going around.
"…So you two haven't done this before either," M-21 said to Takeo.
"No," Takeo said, shaking his head. "We've only…dropped in on places," he said, giving M-21 a small smile.
So they hadn't needed to learn how to skate.
"You did a lot of travelling?" Shinwoo asked and Takeo nodded.
"We didn't stay for very long."
There was a flash of white and M-21 blinked when he saw Seira and Regis going past without any help, their movements smooth and confident. How had they learned it that fast? Or had they picked it up from the people around them?
The two stopped in tandem near the entrance and Regis smirked at him. "Are you coming on?"
M-21 snorted, squaring his shoulders. "Yeah." He wasn't backing away (not that he was in the first place) after that.
"They've taken us here before," Seira answered M-21's unasked question and that would explain how they were so good already.
His shoes tied, M-21 stood up and took a step. And he made sure to hide his grimace; his balance was off, everything feeling awkward. It wasn't like he could shuck the shoes that easily if something happened – or maybe he could. It would be faster to tear through them and leap over the rink than try to take them off the normal way.
He made his way to the edge of the ice rink step by careful step. Regis had already pushed off again, gliding over the ice.
Seira hadn't moved and M-21 blinked at her. And then at her offered hand. Um. She didn't lift it so it was obvious to the people around him but it was enough for him to notice.
"Are you sure?" he asked, not taking to the ice yet, or her hand. She would have more fun without her holding his hand as he learned how to do this. He would slow her down.
"I am," she said, not withdrawing her hand.
He studied her for a second and then relaxed, a small smile lifting the corners of his mouth.
"Thanks," he murmured.
"Don't worry, I won't let you fall!" Shinwoo declared behind them and one look around the rink proved they weren't the only first-timers – they wouldn't stand out.
A hand on the barrier, M-21 stepped out onto the ice. The ground wasn't supposed to be this slick and he glanced at the people around him, who didn't seem to think anything was wrong.
Maybe there wasn't.
"Ack, Shinwoo!"
"C'mon, it's easy!" Shinwoo had Takeo by the hand and was pulling him over the ice. Takeo hadn't fallen over yet at least and M-21 huffed.
Regis went past again, and M-21 was sure his movements changed as M-21 watched him, getting more exaggerated.
Hn.
He'd wasted enough time and he slid his hand into Seira's, mimicking her posture, pushing his legs in the same way he'd seen the others doing. Frankenstein's master passed them, Regis a few strides behind him.
Seira led him around the rink, staying with his slow speed and M-21 kept glancing back at her feet, trying to do the same as her.
They passed Tao and Ik-han, Tao hanging off the side of the barrier and laughing.
It didn't take long for M-21 to gain more confidence, starting to take longer strides.
"Shi-!" There was a patch of ice less even than the rest and he threw his weight too much back trying to check his balance.
Seira tightened her grip and turned her hand to support him. M-21's feet skittered but with her help he didn't fall over.
"Thanks," he said after making sure he wasn't going to fall over again. No-one was looking at them, concentrating on their own skating.
She smiled in response and they started moving again.
Just as M-21 was getting the hang of it, starting to need to weave around slower people, Seira guided him to the exit.
"Huh, our time's up?" M-21 asked and she nodded. Had they already been on the ice for that long?
They got ambushed by Tao as soon as they stepped out, laughing as he enveloped them in a hug. He was covered in ice but didn’t seem bothered by it. The others were there, Frankenstein surrounded by cups of hot drinks waiting for them.
"We doing this again tomorrow?" Tao asked and was met with a cheer.
M-21 went with Seira to take their ice skates off, smiling. That didn't sound like a bad idea.
