M-21 stared inside his room, and then turned to give Tao a dry look. "Why..." Tao had called him up for this?
Tao grinned, not looking put out by M-21's reaction. "Because you need to personalise your room!"
"I didn't buy that." 'That' was a giant wolf plushie in the corner of M-21's room. And by giant, it took up the entire corner and was almost taller than M-21 was. In fact... M-21 squinted at the wolf's legs. If it was able to stand completely, M-21 was sure it would stand taller than him.
Tao continued smiling.
"How did you even get it inside my room?" It was too big for the door. Had he brought it in from the window?
Tao just waggled his fingers, laughing. "Trade secret, and I ain't telling!"
And in the face of that, M-21 just sighed, rolling his eyes. "Fine, I won't throw it out."
Tao gasped, but M-21 had been around him long enough to know he wasn't being serious.
But Tao was right - it wasn't as if he had that much in his room anyway. Not that M-21 would say that out loud. That would just encourage Tao.
"Just don't buy anything else for me." Tao had already crammed Takeo's room full with items.
Tao waved a hand as he turned to leave. "Got it!"
* * *
Tao frowned as he approached M-21's room the next day. M-21 had been feeling under the weather the whole day and it was only because of the combined efforts from him and Takeo that they'd been able to convince M-21 to go home and rest. They would be fine without him for a couple of hours.
He'd kept contact with M-21 during the day, but M-21 had stopped responding just before the final bell had went.
It probably meant nothing. M-21 had probably finally dropped off to sleep.
But still. There had been too many times when someone from the household had dropped out of contact and that had been because they'd gotten caught up into a fight for their lives.
The house was fine when Tao had entered, and the children were there playing games as usual, so that seemed fine. Tao snuck up the stairs and knocked on the door.
No answer.
Could still mean nothing and that M-21 was sleeping. So just in case, Tao opened the door and poked his head through the gap, trying to be quiet in case M-21 was sleeping.
Empty rumpled bed, clothes strewn over the floor, two wolves curled up in the corner-
Eh?
Tao blinked, taking the catalogue again. The number of wolves stayed the same.
The live wolf curled up at the base of the plushie moved and then their ears pricked up towards Tao.
Tao smiled as M-21 got up on all paws, shaking off the nap in a pretty damn energised shake. When M-21 padded over, Tao knelt down so M-21 could greet him.
"Heya to you too," Tao murmured, scratching M-21 behind the ears. "Felling better?"
M-21 huffed, and Tao took that as a 'yes'.
But it was good to know the plushie had kept M-21 company while the rest of them had been away.
Maybe he should get another one for M-21. Just in case, of course.
