M-21 opened Tao's room and poked his head in. He'd knocked but had gotten no response. Which meant Tao either wasn't there or he hadn't heard – the light was shining from under the door, so it must be the second one.
He was right: Tao was sitting in front of his desk, humming as he worked on something…red.
Tao probably still wouldn't hear him if he called out to him, so M-21 walked over, glancing at what Tao was making. Red and white cloth and it couldn't have something to do with the RK – M-21 was sure Tao would have colour-coordinated them and made something black.
Then again, this was Tao; trying to predict what he would do next never worked.
M-21 frowned while when he stood at Tao's shoulder. There was red jacket already completed, and Tao was working on a red hat.
The jacket was too small for anyone in the household, but it was too big for the puppy.
Which left one person.
"I'm not wearing that," M-21 said, seeing Tao jump.
"M!" Tao waved the hat, then seemed to realise what he was doing and tried to edge it out of M-21's sight. "This isn't – um." Tao chuckled, leaning back in his chair. "You did ask me to make this."
M-21 rolled his eyes. "Asking me when I'm sleeping doesn't count."
Tao puffed up his cheeks. "I know that!" He held up a finger. "One second."
M-21 waited as Tao reached for his pocket computer and started tapping on it. Different camera feeds showed up on the screen and the date in the lower right corner jump back a month.
"Aaand – there!" Tao picked on that showed the living room, Tao sitting on the soft with his laptop open in front of him. M-21 could see there was something moving on Tao's laptop, but he couldn't see what it was.
A few seconds later, a wolf padded into view, jumping up next to Tao, squeezing his head onto Tao's lap.
M-21 sighed, glancing away for a second. The others had told him how he acted when he was instinctual, seeking their touch more, but it was something else to see it for himself.
"Heya, M," the Tao in the recording said, wrapping an arm around his neck. "I'm just watching a couple of videos."
Wolf-him seemed interested by what he was watching, wriggling close enough his snout almost touched the screen, his tail thumping against the sofa.
"Hm?" Tao said, scratching between his ears. "Do you want that too?"
A huff in replay, wolf-him's tail thumping harder.
"All right! One santa costume coming up! I'll have it ready by next month!"
Tao paused it. "See?" Tao said, grinning at him. "You asked for it."
He had… M-21 sighed, closing his eyes. "Fine, complete it."
"Aaand-?" M-21 opened his eyes to see Tao watching him. "Take as many pictures as you want."
"All r – what?" Tao blinked at him. "Are you sure you said that right?"
M-21 nodded. "I…don't mind." The wolf was part of him, he knew that, and if the wolf part of him wanted it, then he did too.
"I've forgotten enough," M-21 said, looking over the parts of the costume again. "I'd like to have some way to remember what happened, even if I don't."
He didn't react in time when Tao stood up and flung himself at him, wrapping him up in a hug.
M-21 returned the hug, content with the physical comfort even though he didn't know what Tao had decided to it. Just Tao being Tao as usual.
"You know…" Tao leaned back to look at him, a smile growing on his face. "I could make something similar for you."
"When I remember?" M-21 watched Tao's grin grow. "No," he said. "I – don't think I can do that yet." He would be too embarrassed to enjoy it.
"Heh, all right. The offer's always open in case you change your mind." Tao leaned in and gave him another hug.
"Okay," he said, relaxing into it.
"Why did you come in here anyway?" Tao asked, stepping back after ending the hug.
Oh. Yeah. "Takeo and I are going out for a walk – we were wondering if you wanted to come with us." He glanced at the costume. He could be too busy though…
Tao chuckled, patting him on the shoulder. "I'll have that finished waaay before the next full moon, so you're not leaving me behind."
M-21 smiled. Good.
