There were a lot of things M-21 had to get used to after being taken in Frankenstein and his master.

Regular meals, new clothes, actually feeling clean without the itchiness of chemicals on his skin or knowing that he was being watched.

The green was unexpected.

There were usually potted plants in the Union labs, cheap plastic crap that was there to only break up the monotonous white tiles. It was probably better that way; if they'd been living, the scientists would have tried experimenting on them.

Every mission M-21 had gone on had been devoid of anything living; if the Union had deigned to give him and M-24 a safehouse, it was a trash heap that had nothing in it.

They'd passed through parks and other places, but only for a pick-up or some midnight rendezvous.

Frankenstein's house was different. There were vases of flowers in his house, and they had to be handpicked from his garden. M-21 had thought it was a trick at first, the flowers there to cover up any lingering scents that escaped Frankenstein's lab, but they weren't. Because there weren't any scents to hide, apart from Frankenstein's cooking.

It was weird, being able to peer out his window and see the vibrant colours below him. Sometimes he saw Frankenstein working in the garden, on his hands in knees.

It was different. The Union scientists didn't care about the blood that splattered their labcoats, the wreck of a human being they'd left on the surgery table, so long as they got the results they wanted.

Frankenstein, on the other hand, did what he could to not disturb the plants while he was working on them, his hands gentle enough to not even rip a delicate petal.

It made M-21...curious. He didn't dare touch one of Frankenstein's flowers, so he went out to buy a potted plant for his room. It wasn't as if he had anything else to spend his money on.

He sat it on his windowsill, making sure it would have enough sunlight, and then stared at it. Huh. So all he had to do was water it?

It was a weird experience, just having this thing that relied on him to live. It wasn't as if it could break out of its pot and run like he and M-24 had tried their best to do.

M-21 couldn't help checking on it every day, making sure it was still all right, if its leaves had changed colour. He'd found a few brown tips and looked up what he had to do to make sure it didn't spread or how to make sure it didn't happen again.

He'd also found out that talking to the damn thing was also supposed to help them grow. Was that why he had heard Frankenstein humming and talking about his day to his garden?

M-21 didn't bother trying it. He didn't have anything to say to a plant.

Until a few days later, where he closed his window to make sure no-one could hear him, gathered the pot into his arms and started muttering about the new noblesses that had invaded his no longer safe haven.

He wasn't sure about the plant, but he did feel a bit better after that.

Written for icylook's prompt, 'M-21 and the colour green.'

This was going to be a tiny fic just about how M-21 gets a plant and then it turns out his awakened senses means he's way more sensitive to pollen, but then that didn't fit with the tone of how the fic ended up, pfffft.
