"Fetch!"
M-21 looked up in time to see a branch whizzing past the living room window. He sighed and walked over to it, his cup of tea warming his hand.
"Awww, come on-!"
Tao was crouched next to the puppy, his chin in his palm as he leaned his elbow on his knee.
"What're you trying to do now?" M-21 asked, leaning on the window frame.
"I'm trying to play fetch with the puppy," Tao said, waving a new branch in front of the puppy's nose, "but he's being stubborn like someone else I could name."
"Heh." M-21 smirked as he sipped his tea, the puppy watching the branch but not trying to get it.
"Say...M?"
Crap. He knew that tone of voice. "What."
"Do you wanna try instead? Since the puppy listens to you?"
"What're you trying to do?" M-21 asked again.
Tao threw the branch over and M-21 caught it. It was a regular branch as far as M-21 could tell, a few leaves still holding on.
"Play fetch! I throw a stick and then the puppy brings it back!"
M-21 glanced at the stick again. "Why don't you get it yourself." No wonder the puppy hadn't done what Tao wanted.
"You two are so alike," Tao said with a sigh, shaking his head. "It's for fun!"
"What you think is fun is different from other people." M-21 snorted.
"The puppy thinks chewing up cables is fun," Tao said, sticking his tongue out at him.
...Point.
"And this'll tire him out so he doesn't get bored enough to try that again."
"Fine," M-21 said, tossing the branch up and catching it again. The puppy had trotted over to sit by M-21's feet, his attention on the branch. "So what do I have to do?"
"Throw it," Tao said, mimicking an overhead toss, "and then tell him to bring it back."
M-21 waved the tip of the stick and the puppy barked, making aborted jumps to get at it. The corners of his mouth twitching in a smile, M-21 threw the stick, where it landed in the middle of the garden. "Fetch."
The puppy bounded after it, almost missing the stick when he tried to pick it up. He brought the stick back, his tail wagging hard.
M-21 took the stick from the puppy, whose paws wouldn't stop moving, ready to run again. "How many times to I have to do this?" Once wasn't enough?
"Eeeh..." Tao stood up, dusting off his hands. "However many times he wants to until he's tired?"
Oh. M-21 threw the stick again, the puppy chasing it as soon as it left his hand this time.
M-21 finished his tea, waiting for the puppy to bring the stick back. Well, he didn't have anything important to do in the meantime.
