Summary: "Are you sure?" Frankenstein said. M-21 nodded. "You're the only one I'd trust to do this."
Notes: Written for anon's prompt, 'You’re the only one I trust to do this.” M-21 and Frankenstein.'
The only stuff that I was coming up for Frankenstein saying that was M-21's first time with the ramen experiments, which I thought I might have overdone that by now, haha.

Frankenstein peered at M-21 over his glasses, a frown starting to form on his lips. And maybe concern was knitting his eyebrows. M-21 wasn't sure, hadn't been around him and Raizel-nim enough to be able to read them well, but still long enough to feel like he knew them. And that was what mattered. That was why he was here.

"Are you sure?" Frankenstein said, and the tenseness that had coiled itself around every part of M-21 started to ease. Frankenstein wasn't jumping at the chance M-21 had offered him — the realistic part of M-21's mind had assumed he would. This... This could work.

M-21 nodded. "You're the only one I'd trust to do this." And that was a strange feeling, extending his trust to someone who wasn't an M-series. Especially to a scientist. But Frankenstein and his master hadn't treated him like the Union scientists: a toy to be played with then thrown out when they broke it. Frankenstein and his master treated him like he was an actual person, someone they listened to when he had something to say.

He took a deep breath and while Frankenstein's lab smelled of the kind of metal and electricity he associated with labs, that was where the similarities ended. It smelled like the rest of the house, except for the slightly more concentrated scent of food. "I know I'm weak," M-21 said, pushing away the well-worn disgust at himself, "but I need to get stronger." And he wasn't going to be able to do that by himself, as much as he hated to admit it. He needed help.

"I see." Frankenstein studied him for a few seconds more then smiled, lifting a hand. M-21 tensed, but all Frankenstein did was pat his shoulder. And it was only a pat — it didn't turn into a grab to drag him somewhere he didn't want to go. "I'll go get the scanner ready."
"Okay..." M-21 hated how pathetic he sounded, how uncertain, and he cleared his throat to get rid of it.

Frankenstein had only taken a few steps towards the scanner before he stopped and turned towards M-21 again. "There is one important thing I must impress on you before we start."

"Yeah?" Dread wanted to form at the pit of M-21's stomach, too used to that fragile bubble of safety being torn from him, but he'd trusted Frankenstein this much already and hadn't been betrayed yet.

Frankenstein made sure he had M-21's attention before saying, "If at any time you want to stop, just tell me and we will."

M-21 stared at him, his breath caught in his throat. He wasn't...locked in? He was allowed to back out once he'd made a decision?

"M-21...?"

Shit, he'd taken too long to answer. "Understood." His mind was still reeling at having this freedom, this allowance to change his mind and that being respected.

He'd guessed living with Frankenstein and his master would have been different than being under the Union's thumb, but he never could have imagined it would have been like this.

Frankenstein hadn't continued on to the scanner, still watching him. "Are you ready to start now or would you like to do this later?" And there was that choice again.

"Yeah, I'm ready," M-21 said, following him. He needed to get stronger and for once, he was glad to be in the hands of a scientist.
