Tao whistled as he peered out the window. "Damn, I think that's up to my knees." He'd mostly forgotten about the blizzard while they'd watched the movie, M-21 transformed for the full moon and curled up across Tao and Takeo's laps. The blizzard had passed, and the snow looked like it had settled.
The puppy was alternating between staring out the window and going to them, his head cocked every time he looked at the snow.
"Oh, right!" Tao slapped the bottom of his fist down into his palm. "You haven't seen snow before, have you, little guy?" If the puppy was only a couple of months old, this would be his first winter.
"You wanna see it?" Tao grinned as the puppy barked, dancing on his paws. "Come on, you two!" Tao said, turning to Takeo and M-21.
M-21 wriggled off them and he and the puppy waited at the window as Tao and Takeo walked over.
"Who's excited?" Tao asked the puppy, crouching down to rub his back. "You excited?"
"If you take any longer opening the window," Takeo said beside him, "I think M-21's going to open it himself."
"You would do that." Tao stuck his tongue out at M-21. Making him rush when he was having fun. "All right then!" Tao struck a pose before opening the window and flinging it open. "Ta-daaa!"
The puppy rushed over to investigate the snow but stopped just before it, leaning forward to sniff.
Tao snickered before sharing a smile with Takeo. "You think he'll run through it?" The snow was piled up over twice the height of the puppy.
"I think it depends on what M-21 does," Takeo said, watching the two.
That was true enough. M-21 was keeping an eye on the puppy barking at the snow after touching it with his nose.
Takeo murmured, "Towels," before walking off and coming back again, a pair of towels in his arms.
The puppy still hadn't gone any further by the time he got back. M-21 sighed and waded into the snow.
The puppy perked up and bounded after him through the path he'd created.
"Hm..." Tao said, seeing M-21 over the snow, his fur making him easy to pick out, "should we be worried about the puppy?" If he ended up in the snow, they would have a hard time trying to find him again in that depth.
M-21 turned around at a particular bark, looking down at what had to be the puppy. There was a small 'whump' and a tiny mound rose up at the edge of M-21's trail.
...Well, okay, between the three of them, they would be able to find the puppy again.
M-21 tracked the mound as it carried on, the previous part collapsing in on itself as the mound moved.
When the mound stopped, M-21 cocked his head, his ears pricked in that direction for a few seconds. When nothing happened, M-21 leaped over and dug the puppy out, carrying him over to Tao and Takeo in his jaws.
"Did'ja get tired?" Tao asked as he took the puppy from M-21, cradling him in his arms. The puppy shook off the bits of snow clinging to his fur and then sneezed.
"I'll take that as a yes." He hugged him and laughed as the puppy tried to jump up to lick his face. "Yup, you're fine."
M-21 had stepped onto the towel Takeo had laid down and was waiting patiently as he was rubbed down. Tao grabbed the other towel and dried off the rest of the puppy before setting him back on the floor.
"All done!"
The puppy dashed off to M-21 again as Tao tidied the towels away.
Takeo was already sitting on the sofa when he got back, M-21 across his lap and the puppy in his bed.
"Huh," Tao said, wriggling himself next to Takeo, "didn't think he was that tired."
"It is late," Takeo pointed out, stroking a hand down M-21's back.
"Mm, true. Last film before bed then?"
"Yeah."
M-21 sighed and stretched himself out farther. Or maybe they were just all going to end up sleeping on the sofa for the night. Well, there were worse places to be.
