M-21 frowned, flapping his wings. Once, twice, three times, and the wings stayed there.

Usually all he had to do to get rid of them was to stop thinking about them, or wait for the wings to use up all his energy. That used to only take a few minutes; was it different now his wings were fully formed?

Kentas clapped him on the shoulder, his wings already gone. “Want to rest for a bit?”

“I can’t-” The wings were still there. Like they were an extension of himself he couldn’t get rid of. He couldn’t walk around with wings on his-

“It’s fine,” Kentas said, drawing M-21’s attention to him. “After your first flight, it takes a while for your wings to settle again. They’ll go on their own eventually.”

M-21 pursed his lips, but nodded. Kentas had been right so far about the wings, even when what was left of M-21’s humanity could have made a difference.

He sat down on the edge of the rooftop, his wings overhanging and he felt his feathers brush the glass with each breath.

Kentas sat next to him, and M-21 blinked when there was a gentle pressure against his wings.

“What’re you doing?” And blinked again, his words more slurred than they should have been. He was more tired than he thought.

“Preening you,” Kentas said, his fingers working through M-21’s feathers, checking each one before smoothening them out. “Some of your feathers are crooked and you won’t fly as well if they stay like that.”

“Oh.” Definitely tired if that was all he could say. But he was focused on Kentas’ fingers, the almost hypnotic massaging he was doing.

He wouldn’t mind staying like this until his wings disappeared.
