M-21 walked to his room, flexing his hands. He’d finished training for the day but it wasn’t enough. He was taking too long to improve, to get stronger. If he couldn’t do that, if he wasn’t strong enough to protect his comrades, then what use was he?

Maybe he should go back to train-

“Heeey, M!”

He was jolted out his thoughts by Tao’s voice and before he could react, Tao’s hand was in his, Tao kissing him on the cheek.

When Tao stepped back, M-21 could feel something in his hand. He turned it over and there was a plaster there. Not one he’d seen before: this one was a bright blue with white dots and on the inside were the words, ‘You are worth it’.

It was too thin to be a plaster though and he looked at Tao in confusion.

“It’s a sticker!” Tao said. “To remind yourself. Like this.” Tao peeled the sticker back and rolled M-21′s sleeve up, revealing M-21′s tattoo. Tao placed the sticker above the tattoo, smoothing it out once it was there — he’d done it so M-21 could read the words rather than someone else.

“Done!”

M-21 glanced at it. “And…that’s it?” They were just words.

Tao nodded. “Yup! I’ve got more if you want ‘em.” With that final remark, Tao left with a wave.

Huh. M-21 peered at the sticker one last time before covering it with his sleeve again. It didn’t seem to be one of Tao’s usual jokes, so he would leave it on.

He couldn’t stop thinking about it though, feeling it on his skin. When he’d went to wash his hands, the words were there. When he’d changed clothes, the words were there.

He was worth it.

Was he really? When he still needed to be saved by the others?

But…they’d come to protect him. Because they thought he was worth it. They wanted him to live.

M-21 curled up in bed, reading the words over and over again.

He was worth it.

…Maybe he could ask Tao what was on the other stickers in the morning.
