Maybe… Maybe he could ask today.
He had been formulating an idea over the past week, not sure if it would work. He’d thought over it so much he was surprised Raizel-nim hadn’t asked him about it, but then, Raizel-nim never brought something up in someone’s mind unprompted.
Exhaling slowly, the act not doing anything to soothe his nerves, M-21 stood up and walked down the stairs.

M-21 found Raizel-nim in the living room, a steaming cup of tea in his hand.
“Raizel-nim?” he said, going over to stand next to him.
Raizel-nim looked up at him. “Yes?”
M-21 exhaled again. “You can erase people’s memories,” he started, “and I was wondering if…you could do the opposite.” If Raizel-nim could, if Raizel-nim could restore his memories, then there was one less thing to worry about when searching the Union databases. And he would get so much more information than just reading lines off a screen.
Raizel-nim didn’t say anything for a few seconds, just looking at him, and then nodded. “Yes, I can.”
M-21 released his breath in one explosive go. “Do I have do anything?” He’d never been around when Raizel-nim erased the children’s memories, always recovering from the fight to see what Raizel-nim did.
Raizel-nim shook his head, setting his cup down. Then he gazed up at M-21 and M-21 stared back, unsure if he had to keep eye contact. He shouldn’t, because the children had been unconscious at the time.
Raizel-nim’s brow creased slightly before he looked away, blinking. “I am sorry.”
“Ah.” M-21 looked away as well. Even Raizel-nim couldn’t do anything about his memories. “Than-” He stopped at Raizel-nim shaking his head.
“There is nothing there.”
“What-?” M-21 snapped his head back to him, his eyes wide. It was all gone…?
“Hmmm… Your original memories used to be there, but they have been replaced by…us.” Raizel-nim gave him a sad look. “I am sorry.”
“No,” M-21 said, his head reeling, “thank you for trying.” He left Raizel-nim with his tea.

M-21 retreated back to his room, falling back into his chair with a sigh.
He’d had some hope of getting his memories back, but he should have known it wouldn’t be that easy. Nothing in his life ever was.
But…while he no longer had a chance of getting his memories back, he was glad he had the memories of everyone around him in his current life.
