Tao was waving a small bottle in his hand. “Catch!”
M-21 snatched the bottle out the air. It had a picture of a woman with bright red hair. “You want me to drink this?”
“Of course not — you’d-” Tao paused, tilting his head. “Well, you probably wouldn’t die, but I do want you to dye your hair.” Tao waggled his eyebrows. “C’mon, give it a shot.”
M-21 inspected the bottle again. “Red?” That was attention grabbing. But then, so was his silver hair, so there wouldn’t be much difference in how people reacted when they first saw him.
“Why not? Unless you want to look like me?” Tao winked, snickering. “I already gave Takeo his bottle, so we can get this dye party started!”
“And what about you?” M-21 said, raising an eyebrow.
“I have this,” Tao said, producing another bottle from somewhere with a flourish.
M-21 looked at it.
It wasn’t even a third the size of M-21′s bottle, no bigger than Tao’s palm.
He snorted. “So we have to dye all of our hair, but you’re just doing your stripe. You cheat.”
“I’m not cheating!” Tao said, his eyes wide. “Hair dye is expensive, and I’d’ve needed to get bleach too and that would have cost more money and just-” Tao wrinkled his nose. “I’ll dye the rest when I get more money, I swear!”
“But we have to dye them right now instead of waiting for you to get a bigger bottle.” M-21 huffed. “We could have bought it for you instead.”
“Eeeh.” Tao waved his hand again. “I was the one who suggested it, so I should be the one who buys it. Anyway, let’s go get Takeo and get this started!”
M-21 wasn’t sure if that rule was an actual one, but he followed Tao anyway, a soft smile forming on his face.

The sink was very red. M-21 watched the colour swirl away and said, “Did any of it stay on?” Because it looked like everything had been washed out.
Tao didn’t say anything straight away and M-21′s amusement faded. “Did something go wrong?”
“I mean…some of it stayed in? I think we’ll need to try a brighter colour next time,” Tao said as M-21 raised his head to look in the mirror, “or maybe try for something neon?”
His hair was pink. Evenly coloured. But still pink.
Takeo’s streaks had been what they’d expected, same with Tao’s blue patch.
M-21 sighed. ”Guess my hair still wants to show what I am.” Weak.
Takeo and Tao patted him on the shoulder. “Yer not your hair colour. Though if anything, your hair is proving as stubborn as you!”
Seeing their reflections in the mirror, how they were the same but different because of their hair… M-21 was glad he’d been dragged into doing this.
