M-21 breathed in sharply, smelling only plastic and himself. His movements were sluggish, the water around him resisting him.

He squinted, the water not stinging his eyes as his heart hammered.

He wasn’t in the Union. He knew that. The water wasn’t green, the lights were on, there were no other tanks close to him.

But there was always that piercing fear when he woke up, that chance that something had gone wrong, that everything had been a dream.

He floated there, his breathing muffled in the liquid. No-one else was there, so maybe he should… Something stood out amongst Frankenstein’s pristine white lab.

A splash of brown and M-21 tilted himself, pushing off the back of the tank to get a closer look.

Kentas was curled at the foot of his tank.

No red in M-21′s vision. Not hurt. Sleeping?

M-21 tapped the glass, seeing Kentas jerk. Kentas looked towards the entrance and M-21 tapped again, feeling a small smile tug at his lips when Kentas turned towards him.

Kentas placed a hand on the glass where M-21′s hand was and M-21 could see his lips moving. Huffing, M-21 shook his head, pointing to his own ear. "Can you open the tank?" he signed. When Kentas didn’t move, M-21 hummed. Kentas probably didn’t know morse code either, so how was he going to do this?

Kentas took a step back, holding his hands up and M-21 nodded, seeing Kentas leave. To get the others hopefully. They would know how to get him out.

He didn’t have to wait long before he saw three people enter the lab. Takeo and Tao.

We’re draining the tank,’ Takeo tapped on the glass and M-21 nodded, making sure he was upright.

The feeling of gravity taking hold of him again wasn’t as bad as other times he’d spent in the tank, which meant he hadn’t been in for long. He still braced himself against the wall as Takeo and Tao entered. While Tao took the mask off, Takeo wrapped a towel around him.

“How ya doin’?” Tao asked, as they helped him out, M-21 leaning on them.

“Could be worse,” M-21 grumbled before he coughed, clearing his lungs. It could just be because it was Frankenstein’s lab, but the first moments out of the tank was always when M-21 was hit by how fresh it smelled. That was probably because he wasn’t smelling himself anymore — it didn’t matter, and he continued taking in deeper breaths. Everything was so loud after spending time in the tank as well, demanding his attention.

Tao snickered, wrapping a towel around M-21′s head and rubbing. “You’re sounding better anyway.”

M-21 peered past the towel, seeing Kentas standing there with - “Where did you find that?” -the wolf toy Tao had made him.

“I’d like to know too!” Tao said, nudging M-21 in the ribs. “You said you got rid of it!”

“And you believed me?” M-21 said, rolling his eyes. He’d said it since Tao kept wanting to take pictures of him with the toy; Tao had more than enough pictures of him already.

“I don’t know,” Kentas said before Tao could respond, holding the toy out to him. “I was instinctual at the time.”

Instinctual? Why had he been… M-21 shook his head as he took the toy. He could ask later. There were more important things to do first, like getting dry and eating. Then he could be filled in on what he’d missed.
