M-21 pulled his cloak tighter around him, squinting through the fog. It had descended without warning, muffling everything around him and Kentas. It also hid them better from the soldiers chasing them — even if it meant it was harder to hear anyone approaching them as well.

All he could hear was their breathing and the soft crunch of their footsteps through the forest.

-21.

“Yeah?” M-21 said, keeping his attention on their surroundings.

“Huh?”

Blinking, M-21 looked over at Kentas, who was doing the same back. “You said my name.”

Kentas frowned, his eyebrows furrowing. “I didn’t.”

“You d-”

M-21.”

He snapped his head to the side, not breathing. He knew that voice. It was one he hadn’t heard in months. A voice he was sure he would never hear again.

“‘24?” M-21 whispered, taking a stumbling step towards the voice. There. Across the clearing they’d just walked into. Just like he remembered. Just like nothing had happened.

A strangled mix between a laugh and a sob tore out his throat as tears blurred his vision. M-24 was alive. He must have - he must have made a mistake, thought his comrade was dead when he wasn’t and accidentally left him behind. He wasn’t going to do that again.

“I’m sorry-” he said, his limbs were sluggish and unresponsive when all he wanted to do was run at M-24 and make sure he never let go. It was like he was trying to wade through mud, everything fighting him. He had to get to M-24!

He was yanked off his feet and his back slammed onto the ground.

M-21 stared up in a daze, Kentas leaning over him, hands braced on M-21′s shoulders. Kentas’ mouth was moving, but M-21 couldn’t hear what he was saying.

M-21, you have to come. It’s been so long.

M-21 turned back to look at M-24. It had been. If Kentas would just let go he could meet M-24 again. He struggled against Kentas’ grip, trying to get away.

He saw Kentas’ eyes narrow, his gaze darting towards M-24. He’d never told him about M-24. Kentas wouldn’t know who he was.

“Sss M-24.” Why were his teeth chattering? He wasn’t cold.

Kentas shook his head.

“Ggck!” M-21 wheezed as Kentas drove his fist into his gut, leaving him gasping for breath. Why-? He couldn’t move, only curl up around the pain as Kentas stood up, walking towards M-24.

Walking… Why was he sinking through the ground? M-21 blinked, but the image didn’t change. Kentas was striding forward, only his waist visible above the grass.

M-24 was smiling at Kentas as he approached, holding out a beaconing hand.

That’s right, M-21, come closer.

But he wasn’t…?

Kentas started swimming, the air shimmering with each raised arm and M-24′s smile disappeared.

What are you-

Kentas leapt from the ground, grabbed M-24 by the throat -no, he didn’t. His hand went through like it wasn’t even there- and dragged him back, dragged him out of sight.

The air was shimmering more, brightening as Kentas struggled with M-24. M-21 wanted to get up, to help M-24, but he still couldn’t move. Why was Kentas doing this?

Kentas stopped, wading back towards him. M-24 hadn’t reappeared and…

M-21 blinked, the fog around them lifting.

A lake faded into view, like the fog had been hiding its presence and M-21 winced, shivering. His clothes were soaked, ice cold pinpricks stabbing his skin every time he moved.

From - he’d - he’d walked right into a lake without realising?

Kentas was coming closer, pulling something behind him, a pale thing, bobbing along the surface of the lake.

“Kentas?” he said, voice husky, grimacing as he sat up.

“Are you feeling yourself again?”

“Yeah…” He couldn’t stop staring at what Kentas was holding. Fins along the spine, the slight sparkle of scales. About the size of a human.

“That wasn’t M-24,” Kentas said, as he hauled the body out of the lake and dropping it on the shore. Almost humanoid from a distance, but the eyes were too wide with no whites to them, with only slits for a nose, and the rows of sharp teeth peeked out from its slack jaw.

“It just…kept singing,” Kentas said, still eyeing whatever it was, “and you weren’t answering me.”

M-21′s chest tightened. It hadn’t been M-24. Of course it hadn’t been. Why would he believe his comrade had just come back from the dead?

But his chest still hurt. From the hope that he could see M-24 again. If he could just-

His vision was blurring again, his breathing hitching, and he scrubbed at his eyes with his forearm. He couldn’t break down. Not now. Not when the soldiers were chasing them. “Thanks.”

“…We can-”

Keep moving,” M-21 insisted as he stood up. M-24 hadn’t sacrificed himself for him to die because he missed M-24.

Kentas didn’t say anything for a few seconds, studying him, and M-21 glared at him. “I’m fine.”

“You’re not,” Kentas said, but he clapped a hand on M-21′s shoulder, giving it a squeeze. “Let’s go.”

Good. The further they left the whatever it was behind them, the better he’d feel.

For nightmarish-reverie-prompts' "Tears ran down his face as he stared across the lake. There, as a ghostly apparition, was his past lover. They met eyes, and the emotions crashed down on him at once. He reached out towards the lake, crying as he screamed his lover’s name."
