M-21 could hear barking. And snarling. It was coming from the living room and he went over, frowning.

It was the puppy, he could recognise that much, but the puppy didn’t vocalise often, usually tugging on someone’s trousers to get their attention.

He stilled at an answering snarl, louder and deeper, making the puppy’s barks sound like squeaks in comparison.

Shit, had something gotten inside?

He rushed over, trying to find the intruder.

And found none.

Instead, Kentas was crouched on his hands and knees in front of the puppy, who was barking, waving a paw in the air.

Kentas nodded, growling low, his lips peeled back and revealing his fangs.

It sounded like they were about to attack each other, and almost looked like it too, but M-21 knew Kentas enough that he wasn’t going to.

The puppy barked again, bouncing up and down, and then rushed at Kentas.

With a soft chuckle, Kentas leaned back a little so he could lift his hands and collected the puppy, holding him close to his chest. “You’re a warrior,” Kentas said, using a finger to scratch the puppy’s snout, “and you’ve done well to protect your pack.”

The puppy wriggled before settling down with a satisfied bark.

M-21 let out a small exhale. No intruder, and whatever Kentas and the puppy had been doing, it hadn’t been fighting.

Kentas turned towards him, smiling. “Hey.”

“Hey.”

The puppy yawned, his small tongue flicking out.

“Later?” M-21 said, watching the puppy’s eyes droop. He didn’t want to wake the puppy up because they’d been talking.

Still smiling, Kentas continued rubbing the puppy’s head. “All right,” Kentas murmured, the puppy’s eyes closing completely.

Finding out could wait.
