There was a black cat outside the window. It wasn’t doing much, just sitting on the wall, facing away.
M-21 glanced at the tail out of habit, checking if it had two tips. Just a normal tail. So a regular cat, who was probably waiting to lecture Tao again.
He huffed, considering if he should chase it away or if that would reinforce he was a ‘bad influence’ on Tao when the cat turned its head to look at him.
He blinked, making sure he was seeing what he thought he was seeing.
The sun was still reflecting off the cat’s six eyes, each one blinking in tandem. Uh…
“Are the cats waitin’ for me again?” he heard Tao ask, not moving when Tao perched an elbow on his shoulder, the tip of his ear tickling M-21′s skin when Tao leaned in. “I thought I’d finally — well, that’s new.”
“Nothing new is ever good,” M-21 grumbled, still studying the cat. It hadn’t done anything since Tao appeared, and Tao wasn’t saying anything like the cat was talking to him either.
“Depends on your perspective, heh.” Tao hummed. “We let them in?”
“Fine,” M-21 said, his lips pursed. The last time they’d let in something that wasn’t just a cat nothing bad had happened, but that could have been a one off.
Tao grinned at him. “Knew it — you’re curious too, aren’t you?”
M-21 rolled his eyes as Tao went to open the door. “I said yes because we don’t want the neighbours asking why you’re arguing with cats again.”
At that, Tao made a face, wrinkling his nose. “I had a good reason to be arguing with that cat. Urgh.”
“You were still arguing in public.” The cat seemed to be watching them both now, but not ready to jump from the wall to go to them.
“And now I won’t be,” Tao said, opening the door. “Come on in!” he called out.
The cat disappeared over the other side of the wall.
M-21 stared, waiting to see if something else would happen. It didn’t.
“…Well, that was anti-climactic,” Tao said, closing the door again.
“They’ll be back,” M-21 said, still watching the wall. There had to be a reason why the cat was there.
Tao nodded. “Probably. But until then, lunch?”
“Hm.”
He kept watch while Tao busied himself in the kitchen, but the cat didn’t return.
