It wasn’t long -or M-21 was more out of it than he realised- before the monster started hopping up a mountainside. He frowned when he looked out across the horizon — he was this far in? How fast could the monster move?
Each bound was sure-footed and stable, and M-21 could see the remnants of previous jumps, claw marks gouging the rock.
There were no helicopters in the sky and had the Union given up on him? Unlikely. Maybe they were waiting for sunrise before going after him again.
The monster stopped with a huff and there was something there that tickled the back of M-21’s mind, like he was supposed to know what that meant but had forgotten. The moment passed and he shook his head. He was probably starting to hallucinate now.
They’d arrived at a large cave opening in the mountain. A den?
M-21 blinked, squinting in the darkness. There were claw marks along the edges of the opening as well. Had it dug out its own den rather than finding a cave to use?
The monster trotted in and M-21 could see some distinct shapes, nothing more. It didn’t sound there were any other monsters here…
M-21 was set down on - a bed? It was softer than the hard rock he expected. He felt around. Leaves and…fur? Was it the -
He looked up at a sharp scrape and blinked at sparks in his sight.
The monster huffed and fire bloomed at the den entrance.
Huh. Fire. The monster was more intelligent than he thought.
The monster turned to him, ears pricked forward, and if it wasn’t for the triangular ears and longer snout, M-21 could have mistaken it for a bear.
The monster dropped down to all fours again and padded over. Was it going to pet him again? M-21 frowned, watching it.
It reached over, as slow and careful like the last time, this time aiming for M-21’s chest.
“What’re you-” M-21 sucked in a breath in preparation and swatted the paw away. The jolt of pain from that movement made him grimace but he was more surprised the monster allowed him to move its paw.
The monster jerked back in surprise, its ears flicking back for a second. It ducked its head lower, watching him as it reached for him again.
M-21 gritted his teeth and swatted the paw again. “No.” What the hell did it want? It couldn’t be hungry, or want him dead. It would have killed him by now if did. Was it just curious?
The monster growled softly, jerking its head at M-21’s chest.
What?
M-21 gripped where he’d been shot. Wait. That’s what it was looking at.
The monster whined, looking up at his face and then down at his wound again.
M-21 pursed his lips. “I’m…fine.” Even saying that hurt, but he would be. Eventually. If the wound hadn’t killed him already then it wasn’t going to.
The monster snorted, wrinkling its snout.
It stared at him for a few seconds before it bobbed its head with a sigh. The next time it reached over with slow careful movements, M-21 was the one who sighed, the monster patting his head again.
It backed away to the entrance, checking on him every few steps, making the same low growl.
M-21 had no idea what it was trying to say, but it seemed to perk up and with a flick of its tail, disappeared over the edge.
M-21 stared where the monster had been standing before frowning. This was the best time for him to escape. He had to keep moving — the Union was still tracking him and getting found in a cave with no exit meant he’d get caught.
He stood up and hissed, gripping his side.
His legs shook as he headed for the entrance, his vision swimming. Fuck. His stomach wanted to empty itself and shit, was he really this weak to be affected so much by one bullet?
He’d made it a few steps when he heard the scrape of claws on rock again. Too late. It had returned.
The monster hopped up, a deer’s carcass hanging over its shoulder.
It dropped the deer as soon as it saw him and rushed towards him, nosing at him.
“Wh - hey!” M-21 took a few steps back to get away from the licks and kept going when it didn’t stop.
M-21 scrubbed his face when the monster stopped and found it had herded him on the bed again. “For fuck’s-”
The monster brought the deer over and laid it next to M-21.
M-21 looked at the deer and then at the monster. “You can’t-” He pursed his lips. “You want me to eat all that?” The deer was the same size as him. Maybe the monster could, but he couldn’t.
The monster nosed at the deer, edging it closer to M-21.
Had it really hunted for him? M-21 shook his head. “No.”
The monster jerked, its ears flattening.
Huh. Had it already learned that word from him?
“It’s too b-” He sighed. How was he supposed to explain so it understood?
He gestured at the deer, then threw his arms out wide. Then he waved a hand at himself and shook his head. Would that work?
The monster’s ears flicked back up as it looked between him and then nodded.
It grabbed one of the legs and then ripped it off in one smooth jerk before holding the leg out to him.
“…Yeah, that’ll do,” he said, nodding.
The monster peeled its lips back to reveal its sharp fangs, its tail wagging. It went over to the fire with the leg and screwered it before placing it next to the fire.
Oh. It was going to cook it first. He glanced back at the deer but the monster seemed happy to fuss over the leg.
“Hey.” One of the ears pointed in his direction. “You eating-” He stopped with a sigh. Asking like that was pointless.
He took a step towards the deer and the monster’s head snapped towards him. Huh. Protective over its kill? That didn’t seem right.
He pointed at the deer and then at the monster.
The monster stilled, watching him. It stayed like that for a few seconds before it wrinkled its nose, growling softly.
That didn’t seem to work, so M-21 pointed at the deer leg as well and then jabbed in the monster’s direction again.
The monster looked over at the deer leg and growled again, huffing in a way that sounded like laughter.
It ambled over to the deer and ripped off another limb and brought it to the fire.
Once its food had been set up, the monster turned to him again. It growled something, leaning in as it patted its chest.
M-21 looked at it blankly, not sure what it was trying to say.
It growled the same thing again, slower, patting its chest.
Was that what it was? Its name? But… M-21 frowned. It was made less from the throat and more from the chest by the sounds of it.
“Don’t think I can make those noises…”
The monster growled again, one ear twitching back before it flicked forward again.
M-21 sighed. “Fine.” He could try. He inhaled, preparing himself. “Hhgkss?” He grimaced. Even he could tell that sounded nothing alike.
The monster perked up anyway, its tail flashing from side to side. It growled the same thing, drawing out each part.
“Hng-rr-” That part felt like he was going to swallow his tongue. “-ks?”
He got a soft bark and the monster nodded, its tail almost putting the fire out it was wagging so much.
The monster jerked its head in his direction before it paused, pawing the air towards M-21.
Him. His turn. Hah. How fucking hilarious it was that a monster was more interested in his name than the people who’d given him orders or who he’d worked with on missions.
“M-21,” he said, pronouncing it as clearly as he could.
The monster’s snout wrinkled for a second as it tilted its head. Was that what he looked like when the monster had told him its name?
“M-21.”
“Eemm…” It sounded like a drawn out yawn as it flashed its fangs at him. “Ssh-p?” It tilted its head the other way with a short whine. “Em rrshh-puh?”
If that’s how the monster sounded like trying to say his name, he had to be mangling its name in the same way.
It was never going to say the numbers, he realised. He doubted it used its lips and tongue to talk much. M-21 shook his head. “Em.” He was more than fucking fine with just being known as the letter rather than with the numbers.
The monster’s ears flattened as it growled something softly.
“Em?”
He nodded.
“Hng.” The monster hunched its shoulders, its tail curling around its feet for a second. “Em.” Then it turned back to their food, checking on them.
The smell of cooking meat hit M-21 now that he wasn’t as distracted and shit, when was the last time he’d eaten?
He slowly sat down again on the bed. The monster wasn’t going to let him leave for now, and if it really was the reason why the Union was wary of the forest, being with it might be the safest place to be for now. So he would wait and recover as best as he could.
