Takeo knew something was wrong when he woke up covered in feathers, his shoulder blades aching.

The feathers were purple, with a sheen to them like they’d just been shed, but he sighed, reaching for his phone.

[What did you do last night,] he texted Tao.

It took a second for Tao to answer. [?]

Takeo took a picture of himself blearily looking at the camera, surrounded by the feathers. [What did you do?] he asked again, sending that with the picture.

It took Tao longer to respond, which gave Takeo more time to wake up and start to clear the feathers away.

[uuuuh… i didnt do anything??]

Takeo huffed. [M-21 did this?] That was unlikely.

[meet @ the sec room?]

All right. Takeo’s back still twinged when he got up, making him frown. What had happened that his healing wasn’t working? His back was cold too, and he reached over, brushing his fingers there.

There was a rip at the shoulder blade. The fabric was still soft to the touch with no familiar brittleness, so he hadn’t been stabbed. He would have woken up if he had been!

Takeo found were two rips when he slipped his top off and he poked his fingers through them, frowning. They were literal rips, the edges frayed and not cut, and they went down from his shoulder blades to his hips, almost going right through his top.

Hm. Tao wasn’t one for destroying their clothes for pranks…

Tao was already in the security room by the time Takeo arrived, the main feed showing Takeo’s room, the timestamp at the bottom corner flying by as the Takeo on the screen moved every so often.

“Just started from when you fell asleep,” Tao said, turning his head towards Takeo but not taking his eyes off the screen.

“What’re you betting on?” Tao asked as Takeo pulled up a chair.

“It would have been you,” Takeo said, dodging Tao’s swat with a smile, “but I don’t know. I had rips on my top’s back as well.”

“You did? No blo - eeeh?

Takeo’s eyes widened, staring at the screen. Takeo’s back had been facing the camera, given them both a good view when it exploded into purple feathers.

Not just feathers.

Wings.

“Not me, I swear!” Tao said, rewinding the feed again. “You know I wouldn’t mess with my security feeds just for a joke!”

“Yeah…” Takeo said, his voice faint, “I know.” He reached behind himelf, touching where the wings had come out. It felt the same as before, no uneven lumps underneath the skin. But if it was a transformation (and what else would it be?), then of course he wouldn’t feel anything.

The transformation lasted for about twenty minutes, the same length M-21′s transformation did, before the wings folded back into Takeo’s body.

Tao leaned back in his chair with a whistle. “Neither of us won that bet.”

“What were you betting on,” Takeo said, staring at the feathers scattered around the bed. The feathers were his.

“Maybe a bird had gotten in somehow,” Tao said with a shrug. “Anyway,” he said, getting to his feet. “Frankenstein?”

Takeo nodded in a daze, following Tao. He had wings…
