It’s hard for M-21, being a civilian. Being polite. Not using his strength and wit to claw whatever upper hand he can get.
In the Union, he was polite when talking to a scientist, someone who could trap him underground and cut him up however they pleased with just a sentence. Now, he has to be polite because otherwise he could ‘hurt someone’s feelings’. Like it matters. Like they can’t just deal with it or get used to it.
In the school, he can’t stop fights by beating up both parties, showing who’s got more strength. Because 'that’s not how we do things here’ and 'don’t hurt children’. He’s had kid soldiers shoot him; kids aren’t innocent, he knows that. He’s used a person’s family against them to get the information he needed. It was faster that way. Simpler. They’re a weakness. The only other thing they’re good for is entertainment as they struggle to get out of a trap they’re too weak and stupid to escape.
He’s told he’s got a bit of a temper. Of course he does. All he remembers is being at scientists’ beck and call, and mocked for existing. Of course he’s angry. Of course he shoves back whenever he can. But he’s not supposed to be like that anymore. He’s overreacting. No-one’s mocking him.
He can hear their whispers as he goes past. They’re talking about him, not understanding why he’s like this.
Being a civilian is frustrating. Not because he’s weak, but because they have a different set of rules compared to the Union. They take longer and involves more talking.
But…he isn’t hiding here. He’s hiding in plain sight, but he’s not hiding who he is. Frankenstein and his master knows what he can do and they have no interest in tearing his body apart to find out how. The staff are gossips, but their stories won’t get him killed. It’s…amusing hearing what they’re thinking up, all of it wrong and nowhere close to the truth.
So he’ll try to be a civilian, and maybe in time he’ll get used to it.
