Fandom: Hand x Red/ xxxHolic
Summary: Jim wakes up in a place where someone might be able to give him his wish. For a price.
Rating: K+
Notes: ...I feel bad that I didn't actually put Jim's name in. It's all 'He' 'he' 'He'. Eh. It's not very varied in sentence structure either.
Characterisation? Um, only six chapters out on Hand x Red and Yuuko... Yeah, not sure. =/
It may be finished, it may not. I think there's a scene left after this, but I don't know what would actually happen in it. -___-'
Timeline is after the six chapters anyway, and early-ish in the manga for Yuuko.
I'm having surprising difficulty with terminology. You can tell, can't you?
Again, thought this would be drabble length.
Genre: General
Word count: 641
Status: Complete?

He could feel it, the beginning twinges signalling he was getting closer to the one hundred years mark. His chest itched as he felt the damned tattoo materialise on his skin. Now he would just have to wait to actually -

He got a flash of possible grass before he was face-first in it.

Yeah, it was grass.

"Oww..."

Not a good landing, but he'd only fallen from a couple of feet above the ground rather than the edge of a cliff face. That had hurt even before he finished skidding to the bottom.

He rolled over to see where he was. ...Woah. The buildings shiny and insanely tall. There hadn't been any kind of technology or magic that could create them the last time he was out. How long would it have taken to build even one of them? And what were they even made of? He frowned, considering this. Either the world was developing a lot faster for some reason now, Luca had gotten the better of him and drugged him the last couple of times... or he'd missed a couple of chances to leave purgatory.

He shook his head, putting that thought to the back of his mind. Thinking like that wouldn't get the rest of his heart back and if he'd missed a couple of chances... eh. He was still here, so Luca hadn't gotten his heart either.

So, first thing on the agenda was food before his stomach could declare to everyone within hearing distance that he was hungry. When he sat up, he was surprised to see another house in between the two tall ones where he was. Hmm. Well, he was sure whoever lived there wouldn't mind a few missing clothes and food.

He dusted himself off and made his way towards the front door. He'd seen this kind of house before but that was a couple of trips ago. A little bit weird but maybe he'd found himself in another deserted part of the planet again. The door slid open before he reached it and he froze, waiting to see what would come out.

It was a tall woman who looked a little too much like his old teacher for comfort. Another trick from Luca? It wouldn't have been the first time he'd tried something like this. They stood there, staring at each other impassively.

"I've been expecting you," the woman said as she turned away. Damnit! No weapons, barely any magic and he hated fighting without clothes. "I won't harm you." Her voice floated out from within the house.

He hesitated, watching the area around him carefully. Obviously, she could be lying, but even if she wasn't, it didn't mean she wasn't part of a plot to capture him. But, she could be the only link he had to Luca. He sighed. There wasn't much else he could do but follow her in.

He found her in the room closest to the front door, sitting on one of the large chairs. The room was a bit more cluttered with stuff than he thought it would be. He wondered if he could snag one of the drapes and use it as a robe until he found some better clothes.

"So, what's your name?"

He stared at her incredulously. "I'd've thought you were at least given that when he sent you." He hoped that Luca had sent her, not created her.

At that, one corner of her mouth curved. "I said that I was expecting you, not anything else."

No-one had attacked yet. "Hmph." But how else could she know that he was coming?

The woman sighed softly, though she seemed even more amused at him now. "No matter. I am Yuuko and in this shop, I will grant any person's wish." She paused. "For an equal price, of course."

He gaped at her.

I wonder what the price would be. What does he have to give? His fighting abilities? (Then he'd really have a hard time, since he's not good at magic). Or, his memories of the past?

Poor Jim, always naked when he appears again. Luca must be super old by now!

XD Yeeeah, that was kinda why I stopped it there - I don't know what he could give up. He doesn't have any clothes/special items to give up, his magic would not be enough to cover whatever he got in return; maybe if he gave up his fighting strength... Yeah, pretty much certified he'd lose. Giving up his memories would make things moot point because then he'd forget that he was fighting Luca. ... Maybe. Luca would still come after him though. Memories of Luca?

The most important thing to Jim is his heart. But he really does treasure the memories he has of the people who's helped him. So... if Jim was able to beat Luca, he'd have to give that half of his heart to Yuuko? Which I'm guessing would make him immortal. And I don't think Yuuko would agree with that.

... Oh.

Jim's already paid the price - time, freedom and friendship(?), hasn't he? He's paid that ten times over. Does it still count if he pays it before the contract (X__X Still thinking in terms of PSoH)?

Now to just think about something that Yuuko could actually give to him. =/

I was wondering about that. Reading the chapters for the nth time (*snerk*), well, at the start, Jim doesn't know what Luca looks like. And he's been around before at least once, before the series starts. But then Luca says that speech thing about the spell being used as an evaluative tool, so that means that Jim's 'only', at the very least, just over five hundred years old. (o.O Wtf technology? How come you aren't progressing?) So it definitely means that having half a heart with that spell makes a person immortal and since Jim didn't know any of Luca's characteristics, Luca can change the way that he looks. Not to mention the whole growing up from a baby thing with the king. Unless the king 'sent' his son off to grow up somewhere else to learn their way or something.

Um. Yeah. (Please be short enough for a comment)

I feel he has already given up all that is important to him...his friendship with Luca, his time in the world, his heart...now, he pretty much only has his fighting strength, his memories, and his sense of self. I don't think he can do anything without them! Especially not without his memory, since he doesn't have anyone to pull him along.

Hm, not sure it works that way with Yuuko (paying before the contract). Unless, instead of going to Purgatory for 100 years, he gets stuck at Yuuko's side...?

I think he only needs more time on Earth. Or possibly mortality?

And we've only been getting disembodied voices for Luca every time he's coming back now. I wonder what he looks like now. Possibly he might even look the same as before?? That naive looking boy?

Yeah. He really doesn't have anything else does he? His need to protect his heart (I'd assume)?

XD *snerk* Which could have the potential to be hilarious.

Well, for him to pay, all she'd have to do is wait ten days and he'll be on the way to paying it completely. =/ But then there's the slight problem of thinking what's equivalent to a one-hundred year payment. Eek.

If he stayed at Yuuko's side, he wouldn't be able to look for Luca - unless she sends him out on errands and then he stumbles across him, one way or another.

... Aaaand, another idea. I wonder how Jim would react if Luca found the shop. *evil grin* So we could go the way of 'I want more power!' or 'I want this to end - it's been going on too long and I'm tired'.

So it was a spell that caused the entire thing in the first place, and there was a sort of blood sacrifice? So the cost of the payment could be something like the ingredients needed for the spell. XD Maybe that's too little. I was wanting to hope that the lengthening spell could last for however long Jim's been in purgatory for. Which could actually work. >3 Then there's the payment about magic. Um. Or was part of the other payment his magic? ...Gah

I wanna know if Luca's arm's still in tact.
