"Ha! I think I'm close to levelling up!" The voice was male, deep and sounding like it was a shade away from growling.

"Yeah? Lucky you. Think I've got ages 'til I do." The second voice was also male, his voice sounding younger and higher-pitched in contrast to the first.

Judging from how faint the voices were, he guessed that they were some distance away. He picked his way towards them, keeping an ear open for the voices.

"Really? We've been here for hours and you still aren't even close?" He could hear disbelief in the first person's voice, alongside the pair's footsteps. The closer he got to them, the easier it was to hear just how much noise the two were making. It sounded like one was stomping every step he took, while the other was dragging his feet, sending loose stones in every direction.

"Hey, shut up, okay? I'd levelled up yesterday just before logging off, remember?" the second voice said defensively.

"Hours," the first voice repeated, humour in his voice. "If this is how long you're taking now, how long will it take you to level up later?"

Silence.

"Ugh. I do not wanna think about that. Grinding right now is bad enough as it is." The two were now splashing through puddles, but they sounded close.

He crept to the end of the passage and peered around the corner. The two players were there with their backs to him. One was human, dressed in shining purple plate, an emblem glowing on his shoulderguards. The other player... He had never seen anyone like him before. The other player towered a full head and shoulders above the human, but that was not the only thing that set him apart from the other players - the player was scaled, the scales the colour of freshly spilled blood. The player also had a pair of leathery wings that curved high above his head and reached down to his strangely shaped knees.

Beast, something told him. That was what this player's race was.

He unsheathed his blade, the metal ringing as he did so. The players didn't notice.

"You still haven't figured out how to walk, have you?" the human said, teasing, as he watched the other player near stumble as he placed his foot down.

The beast's ears flattened, temporarily looking indistinguishable from the horns on his head. "You try walking flat-footed for your whole life and then having to get used to your foot being the same length as your shin," the beast sniffed, tilting his head down at the human.

He reached them within seconds and in one swift movement, he stabbed through the gap in the human's armour between the torso and leggings. The human gasped and pitched forward, trying to see behind him as he fell. He used that to slide his sword free and swung it up to block the beast's fist weapons; they were modelled after claws, three long blades sitting on the back of the hand.

With a flick of the wrist, he pushed the claws up and away and then performed a downward stroke, slicing easily through mail and scales.

The two players flew away in a flash of light, and he went back to wandering the cave.

"Ahaha! Yes!" Jing laughed. "I levelled up again!"

Yun grinned and threw her a thumbs up. "This Ultimate Restoration Pill is amazing."

Kenshin kept an eye out in the surrounding area, just in case another mob attacked, but he listened to the conversation with half an ear. Levelled up. He'd heard that term before. Had used that to explain what the pill would do, but he didn't understand what it meant, or why 'levelling up' was a good thing.

"Kenshin? You okay?" Prince asked, Meatbun bundled up in his arms. "You look a little pensive."

He watched as Jing and Yun rushed ahead, their bright laughter carrying back to them easily. Sunshine was in front of them also, poking at every tree, flower, and generally anything he could reach.

"Why is levelling up so important?"

Prince blinked, then scratched his head, frowning. "Well, you can get stronger, faster, learn new skills..." Prince's frown turned lopsided and he crossed his arms. "I think that's it."

He looked away and tried to understand. As far as he was aware, he'd always been like this, unchanging. But his memory was not the most trustworthy of things.

Maybe it would just be another thing that set he and Sunshine apart from players.

Wanted to also do a scene with Arctic Fox, but I think it would mostly be the same as Prince's one?

*pokes ending* =/ I wanted more thought in it, this was the most fitting? He didn't seem to want to think any more, and it just seemed to repeat everything anyway.

Kenshin can't even level up, but then, I guess he has no need for leveling up. The NPC's situations are pretty sad when I think about it. ): This is their world and all when it's just a game for everyone else.

D: Yeeeah. The more I think about stuff from their perspective, the more I think it's a shame for them.

I've got a few more plotbunnies about the differences between NPCs and players, but uh, they'll either end up like this... or as humour. =/ Hmm. Kinda vastly different from each other.
