Summary:
The world of Torpin is open, dragging in Others from different worlds. The majority of them are monsters, prone to violence. There are some, however, that are not, and are able to live amongst the human population, if allowed to. Marland should know; he's one of them. His job is to hunt and stop the Others that seek only to destroy what's around them. On one job, a human Other drops through a portal, an event which Marland has never heard of happening before. And that's not the only thing different about the human...

Marland clenched his teeth and then nearly walloped Shodin with his wing out of sheer reflex the first time Shodin touched him with the cream.

Ears flat, he watched Shodin come again with the cream and then only tensed at the burning sensation.

"All right," Shodin murmured a few minutes later, "I'm going to go to put on some more."

His shoulder felt warmer than before, feeling like there were multiple needles poking his skin at the same time. Not enough to break the skin, but just THERE, where he could feel their sharpness, but nothing more.

Shodin continued on slowly, this time paying more attention to coating the wounds than on Marland's face, his brows lowered in concentration, his lips pursed a little.

"Shit!"

"Da - Sorry!"

Even then, it didn't stop Shodin from poking a little too hard sometimes.

Marland was constantly growling by the end of it, a steady rumble that sounded like it was part of the background, he'd been hearing it so long.

"Okay, so bandages next."

He would have snapped at him for stating the obvious, but his jaw was inclined to just stay shut and continue growling.

"Could you...?"

Without a word, Marland held the end of the bandage in place. He did NOT like having Shodin that close to him, and in an attempt to distract himself, he tried to figure out why this was worse than the anticeptic. It wasn't like Shodin was that much closer, so it wasn't that, but-

"Do you think you can lift your arm? ... Ah, yes, that's high enough, thank you."

Just putting his arm to that angle increased how much he was growling. He wouldn't have been able to lift it any higher anyway. And now he had to hold it in place while Shodin wrapped the bandage around his chest.

"...Hmm."

That didn't sound good. "What?" he grumbled.

"It's your wings; can you can lower them?"

Stupid things always got in the way. "No. I can move them back slightly, but that's it." It was a little awkward, but still manageable.

"No, that'll be fine."

It was probably the fact that Shodin kept leaving his field of vision every couple of seconds (not at he could see him that much when he was in front of him ANYWAY) that bothered him the most. He couldn't see what he was doing, and every time he left, Marland kept twisting as much as he could to keep him in sight. The earned him a few quirks of the mouth, but Shodin didn’t say anything about it.

When he’d finished, Shodin put the basin on the table, sat down on the chair and looked over his work. "I don't think I did TOO disastrously for someone who doesn't consciously know how to do it."

"Why'd you help me?" Marland asked, Shodin could have done anything: beaten him up, killed him, ran. They would have made SENSE. Instead, he bandaged him up.

Marland could barely see Shodin's face, surrounded by light like it was, but he heard him sigh. "You were hurt."

It couldn't be that... simple.

"I doubt you believe me," Shodin said, voice wry, "but... that was it. You were hurt and I wanted to help you. You did the same for me."

Ha. "I didn't; I took you in case you were an Other I had to kill - it would be easier to do it if I kept you close."

Silence followed. Marland wondered if it was NOW that he was going to be attacked.

"And? Do you consider me to be dangerous?"

More fucking questions. "You? No. The one that poss - that's too fucking long to say." Marland squinted at him. "I'm naming him... fuck, I dunno, Poss." Good with names, he was NOT. "Poss, only if you're being threatened. The rest of the time," -he would have shrugged, but he couldn't- "the rest of the time, YOU'RE in control."

"Hmm."

He should just go to bed. Sleep off the headache, just not THINK for the next while.

"Marland...?"

His ears flicked down at the tone: cautious, but wanting to know something. "What?"

"Do you have a place where I can... relieve myself?"

He blinked at him. What...?

"A restroom?"

Oh. ... Right. "It's that door over there," he said, pointing to the door next to the cupboard.

"Thank you." Shodin didn't exactly run over, but he did make his way over to it quickly. He opened the door, paused, and then looked at Marland over his shoulder.

... Other. Different world. Different technology. Dammit.

He made his way over, flicked on the light and then pointed out the various objects. "Toilet. Sink. Shower an' bath." PLEASE don't ask what they were for.

Shodin nodded for each one, smiled at him, and then entered the bathroom, closing the door behind him.

Maybe he could use the time now to crawl to bed. Hide before the next set of questions were gathered up and thrown at his head. And then Shodin would probably worry about him and start pounding on his door just as he fell asleep. He went to the kitchen, riffling around, looking for some painkillers. He found some of them, downed them and then went back to the chair, sinking down on it thankfully slow enough that he didn't jar anything. Maybe he was starting to think properly now, instead of just thinking that he was thinking straight. ... Maybe not.

It wasn't long Shodin before came back, the sound of the flush grating on Marland's ears. In some ways, he was thankful; that meant he wouldn't have to explain absolutely everything to him.

"You should rest."

Marland glared at him. He should just give up trying to predict what Shodin would do; it was never what he expected it to be.

Growling low in his chest, he went to his bedroom, crawled on top of his bed, and then fell straight asleep.

* * *

There was someone else in the house. And he was injured. Ears flicking to and fro, checking for the source, Marland pinpointed it outside his room.

His shoulder twinged, but it wasn’t as sore as it’d been before and he could actually move his fingers better now.

Marland carefully got off the bed, wary of it creaking, and then slowly eased the door slightly ajar. Light spilled in to his room and Marland stared at it. Who switched on the light if they were sneaking in to a house?

The same kind of person who hummed as they moved around.

He couldn’t hear more than one person in the room and, peering through the crack, Marland recognised Shodin puttering around the kitchen area.

Resigned to not being able to sleep for the next little while, he tugged the door fully open and walked towards Shodin.

Shodin noticed him once he had crossed half of the room, and Marland saw that he had a sandwich in his hand. “How are you feeling?”

“Fine.” Much better than before anyway.

Shodin raised an eyebrow at him, then offered him the sandwich.

Marland regarded it warily (a few slices of ham, not buttered) before accepting it.

“I couldn’t get back to sleep, and I was hungry,” Shodin explained, dragging a hand through his hair.

Wait… He hadn’t put the shopping away, so where had-? Marland glanced at where he should have dropped them, but there wasn’t anything there. In fact, the blood stain on the floor wasn’t as dark as it should have been either.

Marland looked at Shodin, who shrugged. “I didn’t want to leave the things as they were. And, as I said, I couldn’t sleep.”

Did he know where things went though? Marland opened the fridge. Most of them, yeah. He removed the cans and put them in the proper cupboard. But hadn’t he…?

He shut the fridge and turned to Shodin, who was leaning back on the table, head slightly tilted to one side. “Marland, did you, ah…”

“The shirts are yours.”

Shodin nodded slowly before smiling at him. “You didn’t have to.”

He was NOT dealing with a sick Shodin.

Just as Shodin was pulling on one of the shirts, the buzzer went. Shodin froze, eyes wide as he scanned the room.

"'S the bell," he explained, not sure if that would help. It didn't, Shodin looking at him in confusion. "Someone's at the front door." At three in the morning. So, most probably a drunk, or someone pressing all the buttons at once then continuing down the street.

"Yeah?" he said to the intercom, listening for a reply. Shodin finished and was making his way over, looking at the intercom with curiosity. Greeeat.

There wasn't one, but Marland heard rasping, like someone dragging something down the microphone. It happened three times before it stopped. "Door's open." He listened out for the door opening, and when he heard the muffled echo, he let go.

Shodin hadn't asked a question, but it was obvious he had about twenty. In the very least.

He ignored him in favour of opening the door first. Paizinel wasn't there yet, but it'd only be a couple of more seconds before she reached them; he could hear her feet going up the stairs, quiet as a cat.

Marland wondered how Shodin would react to her.

He saw her purple head first, round, with a little bit of a blunt snout, and then the rest of her body followed quickly after her, her six legs propelling her up easily. She squeezed in through the gap in the door, and then halted when she saw the lamplight.

-'Since when do you-'-

"Ah!" Shodin was clutching his forehead in both hands, hunched over.

-'Get out get out GET OUT!'-

Oh, you had to be fucking kidding.

Paizinel took a few wary steps back, mostly focused on Shodin.

-'Marland?'- she asked quietly.

Shodin's breath was coming in short gasps, and he was shaking his head sharply. “I – don’t – dammit, stop IT.”

The perfect word count! I see what you did there. =P

Ahahaha, Marland has great naming sense, haha. Poss? XD Well, that does make things easier.

I'm very amused over the bathroom thing, and Shodin reacting to the bell.

Oo, sort of a cliffhanger but not since I know the next part's already written. XD

I didn't get the perfect word count! I was one over! *flails* XDD;

Yeah, he's not exactly... imaginative when it comes to names. I thought Poss wasn't going to be named at all and would essentially be 'it' or something - and then Marland got bored nearly straight away and named him. Aaaah~

Well, it was a sort of cliffhanger, because you still have to read the next bit. Or, you did. XD

Ahaha, drats, so close. =P

How is Poss pronounced? Does it rhyme with...boss? I feel it probably does, but then, it's a shortened version of the word, so maybe not? XD

Haha, yeah, I didn't have to wait in suspense. XD

XD

With my accent 'possessed' starts with sounding like 'boss'. *mouths it out* Wait, now I'm getting confuuuused. XD;; I'm sort of hearing 'Posz' or 'Pause'. *snerk* What do you get when you cut off the rest of the word?

I don't think he'll mind what way his name is pronounced. ;)

Oh, really? :O Well, the vowel sound is really different for me between "possessed" and "boss". Uhhh, I guess it sounds like "puzzle" for me? Possessed, I mean. Sounds like Puz. If Poss and Boss actually rhyme, that'd sound like...Pawz?

...I have no idea if what I wrote makes sense. XD I don't know if those are good examples.

... Yeah, you're right. *facepalm* I can't listen to myself properly. It depends on if I'm saying possessed on its own or in a sentence. I think Poss should sound like Puz, like you said. *snerk* Wonder if I should change the spelling (to Puzz), because I'll end up saying Poss in my head sooner or later. XD;

:D You made perfect sense.

I guess it depends on how Marland pronounces it? :3

Glad I made sense. I was kind of confusing myself there already. XD;
