Summary:
The world of Torpin is open, dragging in Others from different worlds. The majority of them are monsters, prone to violence. There are some, however, that are not, and are able to live amongst the human population, if allowed to. Marland should know; he's one of them. His job is to hunt and stop the Others that seek only to destroy what's around them. On one job, a human Other drops through a portal, an event which Marland has never heard of happening before. And that's not the only thing different about the human...

As for the italics thing, I'm going for if the word's in caps, then chances are, it's supposed to be in italics. Similarly, if there's words encompassed by -' '- , then whatever's in between them should be italicised.

Marland moved his wings so that only one was outstretched, facing the window. The other one he tucked back in to place. That way his vision wasn't so blocked off.
Shodin sat down, a brought up a foot and rested it on the edge of the couch. His left arm encircled his knee while his right hand went to his opposite shoulder. He sighed. "This feels important. The rain."
Paizinel's tail slowed down, and she cocked her head at him. -'You're remembering something?'-
He shook his head, hair freeing themselves from behind his ears. He slid them back in to place. "Not fully remember, no." He hesitated. "I merely... have a feeling that this is important." His hand tightened on his shoulder. He continued on quieter, almost to the point where Marland could barely hear him. "There's a significance to this, but I can't quite grasp it."
And THERE was the accompanying rumble of thunder.
Shodin jumped and then laughed softly. "I don't think I've encountered thunderstorms before." He looked at the window, his eyes wistful. "I want to watch the rain but..." His right hand trailed over to his heart, where he stopped, tapping there with his index finger. He then leaned back, exposing his neck, and then sighed again. "I'm feeling... relief at seeing it."
Relief at seeing the rain? Marland huffed at that. The people here never felt that - they got pissed off because of all the inconvenience it caused, especially when it happened so often.
-'But nothing else?'- Paizinel asked, moving a little closer.
Shodin was quiet for a little while, staring at the ground, before he shook his head. "No. It's only a feeling."
There was a brief silence before Paizinel spoke again. -'Are you... worried about your memories?'-
Shodin didn't look back at her, hand falling away from his chest. "I wonder, sometimes, about what I'd been doing before but..." he trailed off, a small smile coming to his face, "it doesn't really matter does it? I can't go back 'home' anymore."
Marland REALLY couldn't understand the way Shodin thought; it was so different from his own. He never seemed to let the fact that he couldn't remember anything about himself bother him.
Then Shodin brightened, the smile widening. "There's also so much to learn about this world! I don't think I could ever get tired of it."
… Maybe they wouldn't notice if he started hiding behind his wings. They could just assume that it was because of the storm.
Paizinel laughed at that, her tail waving again. –'That's good.'-
Marland's eyes started to feel heavy, and he was starting to develop another small headache. Slowly, his ears started to go down. He was getting sleepy AGAIN? Was he going to start sleeping for the entire day soon?
Paizinel then glanced at him. -'Maybe you'll get Marland used to talking more,'- she teased.
He snorted. "Can try." He then yawned. It caught him by surprise, and it was strong enough that he couldn't stop it, or even stifle it a little once it had started. He shook his head after out of instinct, ears flattening. A quick look at Shodin showed that he hadn't reacted to the display of teeth. Marland was beginning to wonder if Shodin actually had a self-preservation instinct, or at least an active danger instinct. ... But he HAD reacted to the lightning and thunder though. Was it just with living things that he was okay with? Well, it was SOMETHING at least.
-'And you need to go back to sleep, it looks like.'- She smiled at him.
"I've been sleeping enough," he grumbled.
Shodin blinked, frowned, and then leaned forward. Right, he couldn't really hear him with the storm outside.
Another flash.
"I don't think I'd be able to sleep with this anyway." His wing had helped to deflect some of the light, so now the room just looked like it was lit up for a second before fading away again, but it was still uncomfortable.
-'And your body wants rest either way,'- she pressed.
Marland would have argued, but he yawned instead when he opened his mouth. He growled low in his throat, shaking his head in an attempt to wake himself up. It didn't work, the world growing fuzzy and overlapping around the edges already.
He jerked back when the room lit up again, wide awake. But only for a second. The time between the lightning strikes were varying a bit much. The following boom came in seconds. Marland sighed, shaking his head gently. Whatever. The weather was never that consistent anyway, so there was no point thinking about it.
Head and ears down, he said, "Fine" before going back to bed. The rumble of thunder followed him to bed, but it didn't take long for him to fall asleep.
* * *
It was raining when he woke up. It wasn't heavy, but it was still there, still enough to make its presence obvious. Ears twitching, Marland listened for anything out of place. Nothing much, but he could hear humans talking quietly, and the thrum of the TV. He didn't recognise the voices, but he could guess that they weren't actually in the room.
Marland stretched out his left arm, feeling the tug of muscles. He didn't try it with his right arm. He did feel better though, mostly rested, apart from the pain in his shoulder. He couldn't tell what the time was, not with the sky being as overcast as it should be. Roll over and just sleep some more, or - yeah, get something to eat. He wasn't sure how long it'd been since he'd last eaten, but it'd definitely been a while. Marland slipped off the bed and in to the main room.
Shodin was there, sitting on the couch, watching the TV. He noticed him instantly, looking up to him and waving.
"Evening."
He grunted in return, one ear twitching halfway down before going up again.
On the TV, two people were trying to sell -Marland squinted at what they were holding- anti-wrinkle cream. The background was a block of swiftly changing colours that kept dragging your eye away and very quickly just hurt to look at.
"Paizinel went home," Shodin said, indicating the empty space where she'd been sitting with his head.
Marland flicked his ear to the side again. That was obvious. She didn't usually stay for very long, the enclosed spaces being too small for her comfort.
The next ad that followed the first had the same talking monkey as the ones he'd seen… yesterday? This morning?
Marland went over to the kitchen and started fixing something up to eat.
"Is there a reason why there are so many 'ads'?"
That had been about two minutes before the first question. "They want your – our… They want money." While the food was heating, Marland got a few more painkillers.
Shodin was watching him over the back of the couch. "What's that?" he asked, open curiosity written clearly on his face as he stared at his hand.
"My painkillers," he said as he ate one.
A frown slowly appeared on Shodin's face, eyebrows lowering. "…Your medicine?"
He nodded, not sure why he was dragging the conversation out. Maybe if he didn't, Shodin would ask about something with harder answers.
There was a few more seconds of silence as Shodin watched him eat another one.
"You said that medicine was white, and very small." There wasn't anything accusatory in his tone, but it had a hint of a question behind the statement.
The microwave dinged. Marland shrugged with his wings, the limbs lifting up higher and spreading out slightly, before folding back in again. "That's human medicine." He walked over to the microwave and got out the meal, and then a drink from the fridge.
"So that's YOUR medicine?"
"It's a painkiller for ME," he clarified properly at last. "To the humans here, it's chocolate."
Shodin tilted his head. "And that is…?"
"It's a sweet." Marland eyed him, waiting to see what Shodin would ask next, but having an inkling for at least one thing that would be asked. But he'd hardly been right the last number of times he'd thought he knew how Shodin was going to react.
Shodin's eyes kept flicking to where he kept the chocolate. Huh. Was he right this time…?
Sighing, Marland went to the cupboard, took out the packet he'd just been handling (there wasn't a lot left, but there was enough that it wouldn't just be a taste and then be gone). It was only after he started walking back with it that he realised that, while Shodin seemed perfectly fine with talking and being with him, that didn't automatically mean he was fine with eating something he'd touched.
Shodin's eyes were lit up as he smiled, his lips parted and a bit of his teeth showing through the gap. The look then dimmed and Shodin drew back slightly, eyes lowered. Hmm. Right twice in a row. Marland didn't feel so pleased about it this time.
He turned back to get an unopened packet, wings and ears quivering. He should have known. Really, just having Shodin not screaming and trying to kill him should be enough for him. Why was he suddenly expecting more? Why was he feeling so… HURT about it? He'd been so. Fucking. Stupid.
"Marland…?"
Snatching up a packet, Marland glanced at it to double-check that it was definitely unopened and then stalked back, trapping the growl at the back of his throat, but he couldn't quite stop his ears being plastered to his skull, or the small baring of his teeth when he dropped the chocolate in Shodin's hands. Shodin fumbled with it, not expecting that.
That done, he turned away, but not before he saw the startled look in Shodin's eyes change and harden.
Hah. He REALLY should have –
Shodin lunged over the couch, far quicker than Marland thought he could be, and caught his wrist.

Explains why Marland doesn't experiment with food. XD
