Summary:
The world of Torpin is open, dragging in Others from different worlds. The majority of them are monsters, prone to violence. There are some, however, that are not, and are able to live amongst the human population, if allowed to. Marland should know; he's one of them. His job is to hunt and stop the Others that seek only to destroy what's around them. On one job, a human Other drops through a portal, an event which Marland has never heard of happening before. And that's not the only thing different about the human...

As for the italics thing, I'm going for if the word's in caps, then chances are, it's supposed to be in italics. Similarly, if there's words encompassed by -' '- , then whatever's in between them should be italicised.

Shodin had finished his pieces of chicken by the time Marland had gotten out of the shower. The plate was no longer there on the table, and it looked like it had been washed already and put on the drying rack. Marland dumped the clothes in the basket.

Shodin glanced at him smiling ruefully, his hair falling away as he leaned back on the chair. "I still couldn't talk to him; I could barely feel him this time." He sat forward, and started pulling his hair together, one hairband stretched by his fingers.

Marland grunted, an ear twitching down before going back up again. If Puzz was avoiding him the first time, it wasn't surprising that Puzz would keep avoiding him.

He watched as Shodin tied his hair back. Once Shodin had finished, he flicked the small tail with a finger. "That DOES feel better, now that it's out the way," Shodin sighed, shaking his head vigorously. The tail swished a little, but only a few pale strands worked their way free. Shodin blew at them a couple of times, then tucked them behind his ears.

Hmm. He looked a little different like that, with his hair away from his face. His head didn't look so small.

Shodin then cocked his head to the side, waving a hand. "Do you think I should try it again?"

Marland stared at him. He couldn't have heard that right. Shodin COULDN'T be thinking about doing that again. "You wanna try doing that again?" After THAT kind of reaction, who would want to do it again so soon?

Shodin nodded firmly, hair barely moving. "I can't really avoid it, and the only way I can stop panicking is when my body realises that something doesn't happen when I used magic."

That did make sense, but there was another way of looking at it. "What if something DOES happen?"

Shodin shrugged. "I don't think something will." He changed his posture slightly so that his elbow was resting on the table, his fist under his cheek. "Nothing bad happened the 'first' –I suppose- time I used magic, and I merely THOUGHT something would happen the second time, but it didn't."

Marland threw him a considering look. "What if something DID happen, and you didn't realise it?" … Like Puzz. THAT could have been the reason why Puzz was getting distant, because he was getting affected by whatever Shodin was scared of. But no, that didn’t make any sense. Puzz could use magic as well, and he'd been fine and more than willing to use it. So… maybe it was a superstition or taboo from Shodin's world.

Shodin frowned, his fist slowly unfurling until it was his thumb braced under his chin, and his fingers were spread. "Wouldn't you be able to tell if I was acting differently?"

Maybe. It wasn't like he knew Shodin that well, really. And he could barely predict what Shodin was going to do, so how would he know if Shodin was acting differently or was the same as he normally was?

Shodin hummed, his index finger tapping a quick beat. "Well, I guess the only way we can find out is if we try!" He grinned at Marland, head tilted to the side.

… Marland REALLY couldn't understand Shodin's thought processes. Or his optimism.
