The world burned.
Why-? Why had Jessica-?
The pain in Rachel's mind spiked but there was nothing she could do – she couldn't move, couldn't scream as the wave crashed into her. She wanted to curl up into a ball but she couldn't control herself, couldn't control anything in her life. She could feel her blood roaring in her veins, her skin changing as the seconds ticked by, becoming sensitive, oh so sensitive and –
"Rachel?"
Something swam in her view, a red blur, but she couldn't focus, no couldn't focus because everything hurt and why had Jessica said that? Didn't she-? Did anyone-?
Cool fingers – hands clasped her own – she could feel something at her back. When had-? Hands on her neck, soothing, but –
"Feel the comfort-"
Feel the comfort? Jessica. Jessica could give her that. But why had she-? "I need her," Rachel gasped out.
The world faded out again, Doctor Rosen's words going hazy and echoing in her mind, but – but, she had to listen, had to – had to get away from the pain.
"We love you, Rachel; all of us do. Focus on the feeling of our hands."
She wanted to, she wanted to but… Focus. Just, away from her thundering heart, the pain scalding her brain. Focus on the touch, the hands, the voi – no, not the voice –Bill's face span for a second, flashing– just on the touch.
Taste was the first to go, the bile in her throat only feeling like liquid on her tongue. Next was smell, the smell of the dirt road, the trees. The world faded out seconds after, and the last of her senses to cut out was hearing, the breaths, the consoling, steady voices – but she didn't want to be alone didn't want – she concentrated on the feel of their touch, just those areas, not on the - no, she wasn't paying attention to that.
Between innumerable breaths, Rachel found it easier to think, the pain bleeding away as she wrapped her sense around the people around her, her family.
"She's doing it. You're doing it!"
He sounded so proud of her, so happy.
She wanted - needed to see them –different from the need she had with Jessica, so, so different- and when their faces swam back into view, she burst into tears and let herself be drawn into Doctor Rosen's arms, submerging herself in her senses, the feel of his jacket, the smell of his roasted barley grain drink, the sound of their relieved breaths and let that ground her.
